This device was commonly used by armed forces, survivalists, and mountaineers for visual Morse code signaling using sunlight—a method that dates back to the 19th century and was extensively used during the World Wars and Cold War.

🕰️ History

19th Century: Heliographs were used by military forces around the world, especially in colonial campaigns where telegraph infrastructure was unavailable.

World Wars: Portable heliographs were used for battlefield communication, especially in open terrain.

Cold War Era: This specific design (with Cyrillic Russian instructions) was standard issue in Soviet-era survival and emergency kits.

Modern Use: Now mostly obsolete, but still included in survival kits and used in outdoor training or by military historians.

🔍 How It Works

This mirror includes a sighting hole and reflective surface with crosshairs or alignment marks:

1. Open the Mirror: Hold it in sunlight with the reflective side facing you.

2. Look Through the Hole: Aim at your target (e.g., a rescue aircraft or distant person).

3. Align the Sunbeam: Move the mirror until the sunlight spot (“зайчик” or “bunny”—a playful term in Russian for the bright light spot) appears in the sight hole.

4. Direct the Beam: Keep the reflection in line with your target. You can “flash” it in pulses to send Morse code.

📜 Russian Instructions (Summary in English)

The instructions in Russian roughly translate to:

> Take the device in hand, open both flaps fully. Use the sight hole in the mirror to follow the target as shown in the diagram. Locate the reflected sunlight on the inside of the mirror. Without moving the mirror from the target, adjust the angle until the “bunny” (reflected spot) aligns with the hole.
