We are immensely proud of 39A, National Law University, Delhi for their significant achievement in getting Anokhilal exonerated after three trials, two death sentences and 11 years on death row.

Anokhilal was first sentenced to death by the trial court in 2013, which was confirmed by the High Court. In 2019, the Supreme Court ordered a retrial due to ineffective legal representation in the first trial. Sr Adv Mr. Sidharth Luthra represented Anokhilal at the Supreme Court as amicus curiae.

The trial court re-sentenced him to death in 2022. Project 39A intervened in the second High Court appeal, where the case was again remanded to the trial court, reiterating the Supreme Court's directions to summon the forensic experts as witnesses. They briefed Sr Adv Mr. Anil Khare in the High Court appeal.

At the final trial, Project 39A obtained laboratory documents underlying the serology and DNA reports, and confronted the forensic experts in cross-examination on the errors seen. Based on the new evidence, which showed that the male DNA found in the victim's ge***al samples was not Anokhilal's, the Sessions judge exonerated him. Now 32, he was released from Indore Central Jail on 21 March 2024.
