The Forum For Medical Students' Research (INFORMER)

The Forum For Medical Students' Research (INFORMER) INFORMER (Forum For Medical Students' Research, India) is an national organization of undergraduate Dr M.

G Deo sparked the undergraduate medical student movement in India when he conducted two national student research conferences in 2006 and 2008 at the Moving Academy of Medicine and Biomedicine, Pune (India). The rationale behind these conferences was that the undergraduate medical student should get an opportunity to present his research work and also interact with his peers in an environment which gave both meaning and direction to his efforts. Dr Deo inspired the students in attendance to organize themselves into a national-level student body which would represent the interests of student researchers, thereby passing the baton down to the next generation. After an exploratory meeting in Pune, the “Forum for Medical Students’ Research, India” was formed. More commonly known by its acronym, INFORMER, the byline of the organization, “Observation beyond vision” aptly captures the essence of the exploratory thrill which draws medical students to research. The organization takes pride in being “Of the Students, by the Students and for the Students”- which implies that the onus of planning, supervising and conducting various activities is that of the students. While INFORMER is not the solution to all the roadblocks undergraduate research faces in India, its mere presence in the Indian context heralds the dawn of an intellectual renaissance in the medical education system.
