Planning for College: What to do during the Summer Break?
Part 1:

Grade 9 and 10/ Freshman and Sophomore:

For you, the summer is the time to delve into your interests and explore new ones. Colleges will want to know about activities you have been a part of and the summer break provides the opportunity for you to put time into them.

Things you might do include:

Look for a great summer program or an academic project that you can do. It could be an online course, sites like edx and Coursera have courses that enable you to explore topics in great depth.

Apply for an internship. Spending time in a work environment gives you a better understanding of how expectations in a work setting are different from school. The best internships will give you the opportunity to contribute directly to the work, perhaps you can write a report, do basic research, or interview customers.

You can use the summer to prepare for the year to come, and start reading about topics you will be studying or take stock of how you are getting on with your previous subjects, are there areas that you feel you need to improve on, or go back and remind yourself about?

Use the summer to catch up on reading. Target to read a broad range of books, factual, novels, histories, fantasy, or anything else that appeals. There are many recommended reading lists on the internet so choose a few books and put some time aside for them.

While many colleges remain test-optional, there is an increasing number that are once again expecting applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of their application information. With this in mind, work to ensure that you have a good understanding of how to answer the questions that typically come up in the tests. Once you are familiar with the material try doing multiple full tests, under exam conditions, if you are getting the types of scores the colleges you want to apply to typically accept go ahead and register to sit the test on one of the upcoming test dates.
