As the nation celebrates their success, a rather predictable trend has once again taken over social media and marketing platforms — multiple coaching institutes claiming the same topper as their student. Whether it’s Vajiram & Ravi, Drishti IAS, Vision IAS, or other institutions from Delhi to Allahabad and across the country, several institutes have hurried to associate themselves with the AIR-1 holder and other top rankers.
A Pattern Repeating Year After Year
Each year, moments after the results are declared, coaching centers flood social media with posters, congratulatory videos, and even interviews claiming how the topper was “mentored by them,” “attended their test series,” or “was a part of their classroom program.” Sometimes, the same student is shown to be associated with five to six different institutes.
This creates confusion among new aspirants, their families, and the general public. It also serves as a misleading marketing strategy that distorts the actual contribution of the institute and misguides thousands of future candidates who are still in the process of choosing the right coaching.
The Reality Behind the Claims
It is practically impossible for a UPSC aspirant to be a full-time classroom student of multiple coaching institutes simultaneously. While it’s true that aspirants may join different programs — for example:
Classroom coaching at one institute
Test series at another
Optional subject guidance at a third
Interview preparation at yet another
This fragmented approach doesn't justify the full ownership that every institute claims. A student might have written just one mock interview or attended a single seminar at a center, yet the institute splashes their photo across banners with captions like “Our Classroom Student Secured AIR-1” — this is grossly misleading.
Past Action Against Misleading Claims
In the past two years, some institutions have faced penalties and legal notices for falsely claiming results and violating advertisement norms set by regulatory bodies. This indicates that ethical lapses in promotional practices have not gone unnoticed and that action is being taken to ensure fair practices.
How Aspirants Can Protect Themselves from Misleading Claims
Choosing the right coaching institute is a critical decision in an aspirant's UPSC journey. Here are a few precautionary steps new aspirants and their families should take before enrolling:
🔍 1. Verify the Claims
Don’t get carried away by social media posters.
Look for verifiable testimonials, recorded classes, or interactions where toppers themselves mention the extent of their association.
🏫 2. Understand the Type of Program the Topper Attended
Was it a full-fledged classroom course?
A weekend test series?
A post-prelims or interview mentorship? Knowing this helps judge the actual contribution of the institute.
📊 3. Focus on Consistency of Results
Genuine institutes don’t just claim one AIR-1.
Look for the overall result trend over years — how many students in the top 100 or top 500 have benefited consistently?
🤝 4. Attend Demo Classes and Interact with Alumni
Attend open sessions or demo classes to assess the teaching quality.
Talk to former students who can give honest feedback about faculty, support, and study material.
🧠 5. Trust Your Own Judgment
No single institute guarantees selection. Success depends on your efforts, strategy, and discipline.
Coaching should be a support system — not the only reason for success.
⚖️ 6. Beware of Overpromising and Glorified Advertising
“Guaranteed success” and “100% result rate” are red flags.
Focus on institutes that focus on substance over showmanship.
