F. N. Souza was a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay, and was the first post-independence Indian artist to achieve high recognition in the West. Souza's style exhibited both low-life and high energy. Any investigation into Francis Newton Souza’s work perhaps begins with (or is) the man himself: hedonist, contrarian, sometimes malevolent, sometimes agonizingly insightful and always at odds with the rest of the world. Even death receives the most cursory of acknowledgments. Remembering his sister’s death as a child he wickedly declares that his family would have rather lost him, a sickly boy than the beautiful little girl. He shrugs off the idea saying, “Better that I had died. Would have saved me a lot of trouble. I would not have had to bear an artist’s tormented soul, create art in a country that despises her artists and is ignorant of her heritage.”

AIFACS, New Delhi. All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society. Formed in 1928, by Indian artists who came together to form a group that would decorate the newly constructed India House in London. Dhirendra Krishan Deb Burman, Ranada Ukil, Lalit Mohan Sen, Sudhangshu Choudhury were selected for the job and the works executed by them still adorn the India House, London.
