RE-OPEN DELHI UNIVERSITY COLLEGES

Delhi University colleges have been shut since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shut down, though necessary and inevitable, deprived students of a holistic and healthy college life. The online mode has proved not to be an ideal alternative to the offline classes and has affected the quality of education imparted across education institutions.

The LSR Students’ Union is more than excited to kick off Project Sadbhavna with its first event, ‘Brilliance for Beginners’, consisting of a compilation of short videos from LSR alumni that the students respect and admire, following which the floor would be open for discussion. The speakers would talk about both, their highs and lows, to combat the idea that “everyone seems to be better than me” prevalent at LSR.

Grab a seat, let’s shatter the notion of self-doubt together. We hope to see you there! ✨

Project Sadbhavna aims to create a safe space for open conversations about living in a competitive, overwhelming environment that is our college life. We urge all students to come together for this initiative in making our college a safer and more inclusive space where despite not being together physically, we can support one another in growing and empowering each other.

*Condemn LSR administration's Ignorance of Student Body's Demands*

LSR administration, after much pressure exerted by the student body, had previously provided a very ambiguous reply to the demands of student body on the 19th of November. The LSR student union had replied highlighting the very informal and vague anture of the reply and also the non-addressal of a majority of our demands. A call for mass emailing was given on 24th and 26th November due to the absence of a response from the administration's part. It has been more than a week, yet we haven't received a satisfactory reply from the administration. This is the testimony to the anti-democratic and anti-student character of the LSR administration.Such response from the administration has to be condemned.

The LSR SU General Secretary calls for a *Protest* in front of the *LSR Main Gate* on *7th December, 1PM* demanding for a proper dialogue and implementation of student demands.

We urge the student body to rise against this blood-stained administration for the collective benefit of the student community.

*Meet our demands!*

Unnimaya,
General secretary,
LSR SU.

PRESS RELEASE

12/11/2020

On the 12th of November 2020, at 11 am a protest was convened by Prashansa and Unnimaya of the LSR SU, to demand justice in context to the institutional murder of Aishwarya Reddy. People from many colleges and political organisations turned up. The demands made were in context to the larger fight of inaccessibility of Education and the exclusive nature of educational institutions. The demands raised concerns regarding ensuring Justice for Aishwarya Reddy who was institutionally murdered by the College Authorities and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The protest saw huge barricading by police forces and media attention as well.
Solidarity was also presented by political organizations like SFI, AISA, COLLECTIVE, KYS, and Pinjratod. A representative from AUDSC also extended solidarity towards the movement.
The LSR SU General Secretary also addressed the gathering stating all the demands that the LSR Student Community presented.
"The institutional murder of Aishwarya Reddy was not an individual instance, many students from marginalised communities have been forced to take their lives, and noone but the college authorities, educational structures, UGC, and the ministry are to be held responsible and accountable for the same." said Unnimaya, General Secretary LSR SU.

A burning of the hostel notice of evacuation for LSR stydents also symbolically took place to demand the revokation of the 'First year only' hostel policy of Lady Shri Ram College for Women.
The issues related to hostel unavailability, Online Education Divide, etc were also raised.

As the protest proceeded, a group of 8 students from the college were called inside the college to talk to the principal, staff advisors and a few other professors. The memorandum was given to the authorities, inside the college, with a demand to answer them within a week's time.
Out of the many demands that we had put forward such as revocation of Hostel Vacating notice, 1st year Hostel Policy, Clause 1 of hostel undertaking which prohibited students from taking part in protests, distribution of tablets and data packs for online classes, issues related to fee payment, mechanisms facilitate availability of recorded class lectures, extension of dates for internal assessments and the formation of a Committee to deal with such issues and exclusion faced by socially and economically backward Students with due student representation etc only few have been addressed by the administration.
The Principal of LSR college has given us the following response:
The administration will try to make the process of disbursement of scholarships swifter and provide free ships.
The deadline for fee payment has been extended and would consider fee waiver as well. The response also noted that the administration will review the hostel policy.
Last for internal assessment has been extended and will make available the services of two councillors throughout the week online.
Therefore it's seen that while some demands by the LSR student community have been addressed, quite a few remain ambiguous, while the remaining demands have not been addressed at all. The student community shall continue their protest till the time all their demands are agreed and catered to.
