The theme for Kula 2019 is "Histories and Memories: 90s to the Present".
We look forward to seeing you on the 29th and 30th of March, 2019 as we explore how a society builds and perpetuates itself through processes of remembering, reproducing, and memorialising.

Kula exchange refers to the traditional gift exchange system prevalent among the Trobriand islanders. The true symbolic significance of such an exchange lies in the nature and the meanings that are attached to that particular form of exchange. The act of gift giving is imperative for social organisation as the participants engage in the same as a means to achieve the desired social status. Hence it organises social hierarchy. They also form trade relations that extend beyond its economic dimension. Thus trust is placed at the very heart of Kula exchange.
