✨️The Poona Pact Revisited ✨
In 1932, inside the walls of Yerwada Jail, two of India’s most influential leaders debated one of the most defining questions of political representation:
How should a democracy include those it has historically excluded?
Our project revisits this moment through a concise factual dialogue between Gandhi and Ambedkar, tracing the tensions that shaped the Poona Pact.
📌 What we explored
– Why Ambedkar viewed separate electorates as essential for Dalit autonomy.
– Why Gandhi believed joint electorates were necessary for social cohesion.
– How Gandhi’s fast altered the negotiation space.
– What the final settlement meant for political representation in colonial India.
– And what might have unfolded if the Pact had failed.
📝 Why it matters today
The Poona Pact continues to influence debates on reservation, equality, political voice, and the limits of compromise in democracy.
Understanding this moment helps us understand the present.
