Planetary scientists have used data from NASA's InSight lander to determine that the Martian crust is on average 42 to 56 kilometers thick, about 70 percent thicker than Earth's continental crust. Additionally, the research indicates that much of Mars' internal heat likely originates from the crust, with radioactive elements contributing to volcanic activity. These findings challenge the notion that Mars is geologically inactive.
