Planetary scientists have used data from NASA's InSight lander to determine that the Martian crust is on average 42 to 56 kilometers thick, about 70 percent thicker than Earth's continental crust. This measurement was made possible by studying seismic waves from a magnitude 4.7 Marsquake that lasted over six hours. The study also revealed that the Martian crust is inconsistent across the planet, which may explain the elevation difference between the northern and southern hemispheres. Contrary to previous beliefs, the thinner crust in the northern hemisphere suggests that both hemispheres have similar rock densities. Additionally, the research indicates that much of Mars' internal heat likely originates from the crust, with radioactive elements contributing to volcanic activity. These findings challenge the notion that Mars is geologically inactive.
