Speaking part 1
Topic: Physical Exercise
1. Do you do any physical exercise?
You could call me a couch potato (a lazy person who sits on the sofa a lot. “Couch” is another word for sofa). I’m naturally thin without any exercise, so I’m quite lazy when it comes to exercise. I do go for mountain hikes, but I should definitely do more to gain muscle.
2. Do young people in your country like to do exercise?
Gyms are not very popular in my country because of the cost, but I would say that people get their fair share of exercise everyday because of the hills in the city. Many people climb a mountain to their home every single day! I used to live in a house that was unreachable by car and a total of 200 stairs to get there!
3. Do you think people are keen on doing physical activity? Why?
Well, I think they are quite accustomed to it. I don’t think they would be too keen on going to the gym, but they really enjoy going on mountain hikes. Since our religion is based upon the Mother Earth and the Mountain Gods, these treks are a spiritual journey.

Accidents are rare, and so people can feel relaxed and just sit back and admire the views from their comfortable seats.

Yes, sure. I’m a big fan of Transformers. That movie is about robots from another planet. I like robots because personally, they represent the technological advancements.
Do you like robots to work at home?/ What kind of robots do you like to have?
Yes, why not. Robots would help the elderly and retired people with their daily life activities like cooking and cleaning. Moreover, robots could do normal jobs quickly unlike human beings with 24 hours a day.
Do you want to take a car which robot is the driver?
Well, it’s a bit scary but i would trust them completely. I think human would program them well and exactly with many tests before releasing them.
Will robots replace human being in the workplace completely?
I’m afraid that we will see the replacement of human teachers by artificial intelligence. However, there are some specific jobs that they can never replace human. For example, as a decision maker, we are capable to analyze the risks and predict the consequences while robots don’t have ability to do this.

Do you like shoes?
Yes for sure. I’m owning a lot of pairs of sneakers. I’m a fan of Nike and Adidas because they are the most prestigious and top brands all over the world. So, I wear them everyday to anywhere.

Chocolate
Do you like sweets or chocolate?
Well, you know, I don’t really have a sweet tooth, so neither of them is really my cup of tea. But if I were to choose, I’d go with chocolate. I think candies are too sweet for my taste.

I don’t know a whole lot of flavors, but I prefer dark chocolate. The bitterness balances well against the sweetness, in my opinion. I think milk chocolate is too rich, but I know it is a favorite for many, especially young kids.

Not too often, as you can guess. It is sort of a treat on special occasions. For example, on Valentine’s Day, a box of truffles or toffees can make anyone’s day.

Yes, I read the newspaper everyday to keep up to date with the latest news and see what the hottest topic of the day is. I’ve been in the habit of doing this for a long time.

Well, I suppose that I prefer/have an inclination towards international news, especially news about relationships among countries around the world. This is probably because I really care about diplomatic issues and want to keep track of what’s happening outside my country.
Which is more popular where you live, newspapers or magazines?
Well, I think that people read newspapers more often than magazines, normally because newspapers provide information that is relatively easy to understand for almost everyone. On the other hand, magazines contain longer articles and specifically focus on a particular topic which may be quite difficult or unfamiliar to some readers.
Do many people today read newspapers?
I guess… yes, maybe. Because every morning when I go to my office, I can see many people reading the daily newspapers at pavement cafés. However, I think nowadays people are tending to gradually change their habits and accessing the latest news online.
In the future, do you think more people than today will read magazines, or fewer people?
I’m not really sure about this, but I suppose that there will be fewer people reading magazines in the future. It’s probably because nowadays there are various sources of information, so people can search if they want to find knowledge of any field, especially on the Internet… it’s easier and cheaper. Maybe in the future perhaps specialists will be the only ones who read the magazines which relate to their own particular fields.
Do you think newspapers will be very important to you in the future?
Well, honestly, I haven’t ever thought about that before, but I love my routine of reading newspapers while drinking coffee every morning, it’s completely relaxing. So I’ll try to keep reading newspapers as a regular habit as long as possible.

Do you like reading books? Why?
Yes, I’m really into reading because I believe that reading can be both entertaining and educational. Reading broadens my knowledge by opening up the whole world to me. While I’m reading, I can be visiting another country or a different time period, or traveling through space. I can find out how people solve problems or think up new ideas.
Do you have many books at home?/ What kinds of books do you like to read?
Not so many. I own a collection of fantasy marketing books written by Philip Cotler. Besides academic books, I’m also keen on cook books and travel books. “Journey of MasterChef” is the favourite one on my shelf.
Do people in your country like to read?
In my opinion, most people like reading very much as we were told to do so since they were at school. Pupils are taught to love reading and how to keep their books clean, and this is also one way to evaluate the pupils’ behavior and attitude to their studies.
What kind of people like reading and what kind of people don’t like reading very much?
Well, I think people who are involved in outdoor activities generally do not like reading very much, and people who do research or work at schools or universities tend to like reading. However, this depends on other factors, so it’s hard to generalize.

I believe if you want your children to be smart, they have to acquire a love for reading, which has numerous benefits. Reading opens the door to child’s early academic success and leads to higher grades in every subject. Besides, reading can help children improve linguistic/communicational skills in the form of a richer vocabulary, correct grammar. On top of that, books teach children about relationships, situations, personalities, and what is good and what is bad in the world he lives in.

WRITING SAMPLE
Parents often give children everything they ask for and do what they like. Is it good for children? What are the consequences when they grow up?
BAND 9 SAMPLE
Indulging children has become a common parenting problem in many modern families. From my perspective, this practice may create some immediate adverse impacts on children and also results in long-term consequences for them.
In the short term, it is possible that over-indulgence causes some delay to the process in which children learn important life skills. This can be seen in a variety of age groups, ranging from toddlers to teenagers. For example, many over-caring parents spoon-feed their children until they are five or six, the developmental stage in which they should have already been able to eat independently. Also in our country, there is a common practice that parents assist their preadolescent children in taking a bath or a shower. As a result, children may fail to acquire basic personal hygiene skills at the right time.
In the long run, the consequences are even direr as over-indulged children grow up. If parents unconditionally satisfy all the needs of their children, they may inadvertently make their children become over-reliant on other people. When these children enter adulthood, the inability to live independently can cause some difficulties for them to maintain their overall well-being; for instance, they may be unaware of what to do when they catch a fever. Furthermore, it is a norm that over-indulgent parents are lenient and do not require children to face the consequences of their misbehaviour. In general, this deprives children of the opportunities to learn from mistakes, which may cause their problem-solving skills to be severely lacking in the future.
From the issues outlined above, one can conclude that over-indulgence may produce a number of unfavourable effects on children, including the delay in gaining crucial life skills such as self-feeding and the long-term consequence of lacking the ability to cope with problems as adults in the future.

Well, I think my hometown is one of the best places to live. It is well known all over the country for its amazing history, architecture, and food. What makes my hometown more special is the fact that the highest mountain in our country is located there, which offers breathtaking views of the white, fluffy sea underneath.
– Do you like to travel?
Yes, definitely! I think seeing the world, from great historical monuments to white sandy beaches, is what life is all about. It’s a very interesting way to learn about new cultures and explore new places.
IELTS Speaking Part 2
Talk about an unusual food you have eaten. Please say
– What was the food?
– Where and when did you try it?
– Did you like or dislike that food? Why?
Sample Answer
I am a foodie and a frequent traveler. So, I get opportunities to taste dishes from different cultures.
Last year I traveled to China’s capital Beijing. In a traditional Chinese restaurant, I tried a strange dish made up of sea weeds. Sea weeds, as you know, are vegetarian foods grown in the sea and are very nutritious.
I loved tasting it the first time. No other food comes close to it in terms of taste and it is difficult for me to explain it. I loved it not only because of the taste but also due to the abundance of nutrients in it.
Since I’m a traveler, I have first-hand experience of how humans will face a shortage of nutritious food in the future. Scientists have proposed seaweed farms as a solution to the problem. I just wanted to taste the future of human food.

Grimm’s Fairy Tales
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, named their story collection Children’s and Household Tales and published the first of its seven editions in Germany in 1812. The table of contents reads like an A-list of fairy-tale celebrities: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, the Frog King. Drawn mostly from oral narratives, the 210 stories in die Grimm’s’ collection represent an anthology of fairy tales, animal fables, rustic farces, and religious allegories that remain unrivalled to this day.
Such lasting fame would have shocked the humble Grimms. During their lifetimes the collection sold modestly in Germany, at first only a few hundred copies a year.
The early editions were not even aimed at children. The brothers initially refused to consider illustrations, and scholarly footnotes took up almost as much space as the talcs themselves. Jacob and Wilhelm viewed themselves as patriotic folklorists, not as entertainers of children. They began their work at a time when Germany had been overrun by the French under Napoleon, who were intent on suppressing local culture. As young, workaholic scholars, single and sharing a cramped flat, the Brothers Grimm undertook the fairy-tale collection with the goal of serving the endangered oral tradition of Germany.
For much of the 19th century teachers, parents, and religious figures, particularly in the United States, deplored the Grimms’ collection for its raw, uncivilized content. Offended adults objected to the gruesome punishments inflicted on the stories’ villains. In the original “Snow White” the evil stepmother is forced to dance in red-hot iron shoes until she falls down dead. Even today some protective parents shy from the Grimms’ talcs because of their reputation for violence.
Despite its sometimes rocky reception, Children’s and Household Tales gradually took root with the public. The brothers had not foreseen that the appearance of their work would coincide with a great flowering of children’s literature in Europe. English publishers led the way, issuing high-quality picture books such as Jack and the Beanstalk and handsome folktale collections, all to satisfy a newly literate audience seeking virtuous material for the nursery. Once the Brothers Grimm sighted this new public, they set about refining and softening their tales, which had originated centuries earlier as earthy peasant fare. In the Grimms’ hands, cruel mothers became nasty stepmothers, unmarried lovers were made chaste, and the incestuous father was recast as the devil.
In the 20th century the Grimms’ fairy tales have come to rule the bookshelves of children’s bedrooms. The stories read like dreams come true: handsome lads and beautiful damsels, armed with magic, triumph over giants and witches and wild beasts. They outwit mean, selfish adults. Inevitably the boy and girl fall in love and live happily ever after. And parents keep reading because they approve of the finger-wagging lessons inserted into the stories: keep your promises, don’t talk to strangers, work hard, obey your parents. According to the Grimms, the collection served as “a manual of manners”.
Altogether some 40 persons delivered tales to the Grimms. Many of the storytellers came to the Grimms’ house in Kassel. The brothers particularly welcomed the visits of Dorothea Viehmann, a widow who walked to town to sell produce from her garden. An innkeeper daughter, Viehmann had grown up listening to stories from travellers on the road to Frankfurt.
Among her treasure was “Aschenputtel” -Cinderella. Marie Hassenpflug was a 20-year-old friend of their sister, Charlotte, from a well-bred, French-speaking family. Marie’s wonderful stories blended motifs from the oral tradition and from Perrault’s influential 1697 book, Tales of My Mother Goose, which contained elaborate versions of “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Snow White”, and “Sleeping Beauty”, among others. Many of these had been adapted from earlier Italian tales.
Given that the origins of many of the Grimm fairy tales reach throughout Europe and into the Middle East and Orient, the question must be asked: How German are the Grimm tales? Very, says scholar Heinz Rolleke. Love of the underdog, rustic simplicity, creative energy—these are Teutonic traits. The coarse texture of life during medieval times in Germany, when many of the tales entered the oral tradition, also coloured the narratives. Throughout Europe children were often neglected and abandoned, like Hansel and Gretel. Accused witches were burned at the stake, like the evil mother-in-law in “The Six Swans”. “The cruelty in the stories was not the Grimm’s fantasy”, Rolleke points out” It reflected the law-and-order system of the old times”.
The editorial fingerprints left by the Grimms betray the specific values of 19th-century Christian, bourgeois German society. But that has not stopped the tales from being embraced by almost every culture and nationality in the world. What accounts for this widespread, enduring popularity? Bernhard Lauer points to the “universal style” of the writing, you have no concrete descriptions of the land, or the clothes, or the forest, or the castles. It makes the stories timeless and placeless,” The tales allow us to express ‘our utopian longings’,” says Jack Zipes of the University of Minnesota, whose 1987 translation of the complete fairy tales captures the rustic vigour of the original text. They show a striving for happiness that none of us knows but that we sense is possible. We can identify with the heroes of the tales and become in our mind the masters and mistresses of our own destinies.”
Fairy tales provide a workout for the unconscious, psychoanalysts maintain. Bruno Bettelheim famously promoted the therapeutic of the Grimms’ stories, calling fairy tales the “great comforters. By confronting fears and phobias, symbolized by witches, heartless stepmothers, and hungry wolves, children find they can master their anxieties. Bettelheim’s theory continues to be hotly debated. But most young readers aren’t interested in exercising their unconsciousness. The Grimm tales in fact please in an infinite number of ways, something about them seems to mirror whatever moods or interests we bring to our reading of them. The flexibility of interpretation suits them for almost any time and any culture.
