Hog Deer (Axis porcinus) – 6 Important Points
1. Name Origin
* It is called Hog Deer because it runs through grasslands with its head lowered, resembling the movement of a hog (wild pig).
2. Distribution
* Found in the floodplains and grasslands of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and parts of Southeast Asia.
* In India, it is prominently found in Kaziranga National Park and other Brahmaputra floodplain grasslands.
3. Habitat
* Prefers tall wet grasslands, riverine grasslands, marshes, and forest edges, especially in areas affected by seasonal flooding.
4. Behaviour
* Generally a solitary animal and is most active during dawn and dusk (crepuscular).
* Feeds mainly on grasses, herbs, leaves, and shoots.
5. Conservation Status
* Listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to habitat loss, hunting, and fragmentation of grasslands.
6. Interesting Fact
* A rare albino Hog Deer was recently sighted in Kaziranga National Park. Albinism is a genetic condition causing reduced or complete absence of melanin pigment, resulting in a white appearance.
