Sad to learn about the demise of Rao jee and his wife. They succumbed to Covid. Rao jee ran SSS I canteen. I have many fond memories associated with that canteen and its honour. Many times I would visit the canteen in the evening when he was just about to close and I would insist "kuchh to khila dijiye" and then he would open the fridge and give me a dahi-bada and ask the cook to make a paratha and a tea while saying "aap bhi samay se aayiye". After few days I would again visit around the same time and the same story would get repeated. I remember meeting him some four years back as I rarely visited the canteen during these times. I am informed that his son runs the canteen now. Today I came to know about his demise through some friends' posts. And memory of that canteen and Rao jee came flashing. May he rest in peace!

My column this months makes a case for the importance of basic amenities, even if they be internet access and smart phones, especially in times of COVID-19.
