Did you know about the founder of ?

"The mountains and the outdoors taught me leadership, perseverance, compassion and collaboration and this is exactly what I would like our youngsters today to imbibe." Late (Retd) Col. Narinder "Bull" Kumar

OBIH was founded in 2007 by Late (Retd) Col. Narinder 'Bull' Kumar - India's most celebrated solider-mountaineer who first planted the India flag on the Siachen Glacier in 1981, often regarded as the highest battlefield in the world. He got his nickname "Bull" in the boxing ring at the Indian Military Academy as a young cadet.

When Outward Bound International approached Bull Kumar to help bring the idea of experiential learning to India, the Colonel didn't hesitate for a second. With almost 39% of India's youth between the ages of 10 and 30 years, he understood the dire need for such a program - one that would teach collaboration and competition, diversity and inclusion, service and compassion and above all the ability to handle success and failure - all through wilderness and adventure experiences.

"I was the Deputy Leader of the first successful Indian Everest expedition in 1965, the first Indian to scale Nanda Devi, and the first climber to successfully climb Kangchenjunga from the toughest north-east spur. Of the 13 highest peaks above 24,000 ft. climbed by Indians, nine have been climbed under my leadership. I planted the India flag on the Siachen Glacier in 1981 – and am perhaps the only living solider after whom a post has been named – Kumar Post at the Siachen Glacier. None of this would ever have been possible if I had been tied to my desk." Late (Retd) Col. Narinder "Bull" Kumar

On 22 April 2023, visited a community based school run by an NGO called Manthan. This school is located in a rural area near Sambhar Salt Lake, India's largest inland salt lake. OBIH spent the day with about 70 children aged from 6 years to 14 years and a few older alumni children and teachers. OBIH's objective was to interact with the students and teachers and explore concepts around teamwork and collaboration, leadership and communication.

"We are asked to form into teams and each team was to decide on a team name and a team slogan. Our team chose Ekta, which means unity. Our slogan was There is strength in unity. We tried to live up to our team name and slogan throughout the day. We had a lot of fun and learnt a lot of new things" Pooja, studying in class 6, age about 12 years

"Our team's name was Team India and our slogan was Educate one girl and you will educate a whole generation. We learnt the importance of taking everyone along. If we saw that someone was falling behind, we tried to support that person. We also learnt that we should not be selfish and that we should share with everyone". Suman and Dipika, studying in class 8, age about 14 years
