IELTS Grammar Tip:

Three common mistakes with verb patterns are with 'enjoy', 'consider' and 'don't mind'. These are all followed by a verb in the 'ing' form, NOT to + infinitive.

I enjoy swimming, I enjoy learning, I enjoy walking. NOT I enjoy to walk.

I considered moving abroad, I'm considering taking up a new hobby, I've been considering getting a new car. NOT I've been considering to get a new car.

They don't mind being busy, I didn't mind seeing my boss, the children won't mind getting their hands dirty. NOT the children won't mind to get their hands dirty.

IELTS Grammar Tip:

Instead of using the pronoun 'It' to begin supporting sentences, use the pronoun 'This' (or 'These') to refer back to the previous sentence.

For example, look at these two pairs of sentences and consider which is better:

"One way we can solve the problem of traffic congestion is by improving public transport. It can be done by reducing ticket prices and making sure buses and trains always run on time."

"One way we can solve the problem of traffic congestion is by improving public transport. This can be done by reducing ticket prices and making sure buses and trains always run on time."

Clearly, the second pair is far superior as its two sentences are linked cohesively by the use of the pronoun 'This'.

When preparing for a language test, remember that grammar is the basis of language: you need it to understand the meaning of sentences in the listening and reading, and to express yourself clearly in the speaking and writing!!
