Texas Teens Invent Ultrasound Device That Removes Up to 94% of Microplastics

Two 17-year-old high schoolers from The Woodlands, Texas — Victoria Ou and Justin Huang — have developed a pen-sized ultrasonic device that can eliminate 84% to 94% of microplastics from water in a single pass, according to lab tests.

Their device operates using high-frequency sound waves to generate acoustic forces that cause microplastic particles to cluster, allowing them to be filtered out easily — all without relying on chemicals, heat, or high energy inputs.

Engineers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have created the first artificial neuron that genuinely mimics the electrical behavior of a real brain cell and it can even communicate with biological neurons. Made from protein nanowires derived from the microbe Geobacter sulfurreducens, these miniature devices operate at just 0.1 volts matching the voltage of human neurons.

That means for the first time, artificial neurons could be safely incorporated into living systems from bio-computers and prosthetics to implants that restore nerve functions. Unlike earlier models needing high energy, these neurons run efficiently and might power wearable or implantable tech without external amplification.

Scientists call this a turning point in merging electronics with biology — paving the way for devices that think like brains and medical tools that heal from the inside.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi “for the development of metal–organic frameworks.”

The 2025 Nobel Prize laureates in chemistry have created molecular constructions with large spaces through which gases and other chemicals can flow. These constructions, metal–organic frameworks, can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide, store toxic gases or catalyse chemical reactions.

Kitagawa, Robson and Yaghi have developed a new form of molecular architecture. In their constructions, metal ions function as corner-stones that are linked by long organic (carbon-based) molecules. Together, the metal ions and molecules are organised to form crystals that contain large cavities. These porous materials are called metal–organic frameworks (M*F). By varying the building blocks used in the M*Fs, chemists can design them to capture and store specific substances. M*Fs can also drive chemical reactions or conduct electricity.

“Metal–organic frameworks have enormous potential, bringing previously unforeseen opportunities for custom-made materials with new functions,” says Heiner Linke, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.

Werner Heisenberg’s PhD defense in 1923 at the University of Munich was nearly a disaster. His written thesis had focused mostly on hydrodynamics, leaving him weak on experimental knowledge. During the oral exam, he stumbled badly on practical questions, like how a storage battery worked or the resolving power of a microscope. His examiners, especially Wilhelm Wien, were appalled at his lack of lab skills. Arnold Sommerfeld, his mentor, had to intervene, arguing that while Heisenberg was hopeless with equipment, his theoretical talent was extraordinary. In the end, he scraped through — barely passing — in what became one of the most awkward defenses in physics history.
