Varsity goofs up answer-sheets
About 100 MU law students of 3-yr & 5-yr courses left in lurch, OMR system to blame
The optical marked recognition (OMR) code, or barcode, system used by Mumbai University in its 2011 exams has claimed its first casualty. All the answer-sheets of 3-year and 5-year law course are mixed up due to lack of understanding of codes.
Waiting eagerly for two months to see their answer-sheet to check what went wrong in the exam, students of Pravin Gandhi Law College at Vile Parle were stunned when they actually received them.
“The photocopy I received on Wednesday did not have my handwriting. I checked my hall ticket and found that it doesnt match with the code on the answer-sheet,” said a student. Several students of other law colleges also got someone elses copy. These students panicked and approached the colleges, which in turn advised them to check with the varsity. The universitys Controller of Examination office was apparently clueless about the goof-up till the students approached them on Thursday and Friday. Exams of all 3 years of LLB and 3rd, 4th and 5th year of BLSLLB are conducted by the varsity.
A student said, “Our answer sheets came without page 1. It seems they have mixed up as page1 is now taken off due to the barcode system. Makrsheets might have wrong marks also.”
Vilas Shinde, Controller of Examination, however claimed, “Unfortunately, mixing of answer copies has happened. 100 students have suffered. We are trying to rectify the problem. I have given a memo to an officer.”
Shinde said, “Exam papers of 3rd, 4th and 5th year of 5 year course is similar to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of LLB respectively. This resulted in the mixing due to faulty storage. Papers are same, but answer-sheets codes are different to match corresponding students.” He defended OMR system saying, “OMR is fine. This has happened due to negligence of the person who took the answer-sheet for copying from different code and students get wrong copy.”
“I got ATKT in 3rd year exam so I applied for photocopies. When I received Environmental law copy, I got scared as it was not mine. I dont know whose marks are there on my marksheet,” a student said.
