Let's know about Modals and their functions
*Modals and Their Functions*
Type of Questions usually asked in examinations-
*Type 1.* Rewrite the sentences using the Modals given in brackets.(Replacement)
*Type 2.* Supply the correct Modals.
*Type 3.* Fill in the blanks using correct Modals.
*Type 4.* Fill in the blanks with modals appropriate to the meaning in brackets.
*1. Can -*
a) Permission -(Informal)
π is/am/ are + allowed to + verb 1
π is/am/are + permitted to + verb1
b) (Ability/power in Present) -
π is /am/ are + able to + verb1
π has /have + power/authority + to+ verb1
*2. Could-*
a) (Permission -Informal)
π was/ were allowed to + verb1
π was/were + permitted to + verb1
b) (Ability/power in past)
was/were + able to + verb1
had + power/authority + to + verb1
c) Also used to make Extremely polite request.
*3) Might* = Perhaps, possibly, remote possibility in past. Past tense of May
*Note :- Some words are used to replace the modals. They are -*
1) Showing future - Shall/ will.
(Will is used for showing determination/judgements also.)
2) Ability, Capability, Power in present- Can.
3) Permission (informal) - Can.
4) Ability in past - could.
5) Permission (Formal), strong possibility in present -- May.
6) Weak possibility in past, past tense of May- Might.
7) Extreme poilite request - Could.
8) Obligation (legally compulsory) - Must.
9) Moral obligation / Social duty - Ought (to).
10) Duty, Advice, Suggestions - Should.
11) Need (Necessary).
12) Past habitual action, Discontinued habits - Used to
13) Dare - It's about courage.
