The 17th day of July is venerated as the International Day of Justice. It is on this day that self-imposed mandates willingly implemented upon themselves by a hundred off nation state members of the International Criminal Court of Justice observe to commemorate and rejuvenate their beliefs on equity of justice across the globe.
A More Just World…that is the guiding principle, one can also say the North Star that points the legal fraternity towards ensuring that Justice is served above all. This day is the legitimate conclusion of an international treaty embraced by the international community.
Poiter Hofmariski, the President of the ICC, stated on this this day that the ICC reiterates its ‘the mission to fight impunity for the most serious crimes under International Law’. This statement made public to the global media in both print and electronic format further stated that this day can be made more memorable by honouring the individuals working to advocate fundamental human rights of the victims of various horrendous criminal acts.
There is a need to address that the ways and means of committing crimes in these days is evolving and adapting to the new and digital global society. The higher levels of connectivity end up impacting the nerves of billions of people across gender, geography and age groups. This changing set-up will demand a change in the mechanism for capturing the perpetrators, and the delivery mechanism of justice as well.
Keeping this in mind, it is also vital for the legal fraternity to now demand and deliver services to a new and ever-changing dynamic environment. The old methods will no longer prove sufficient to tackle today’s menaces. Thus, there is a need to improve and update the legal services and legal service providers to the sensitivities and sensibilities of the new age. Let us as well take it upon our shoulders, as legal fraternity, to observe this day and pledge a binding oath upon ourselves to keep updating, adapting and improving our legal skills to move further ahead.
