Electron configuration refers to the distribution of electrons in an atom or molecule's atomic or molecular orbitals. It dictates an element's chemical properties, bonding capabilities, and magnetism. The standard notation is written using the principal quantum number (shell), sublevel block (s, p, d, f), and superscripts (number of electrons).
Standard Notation
The order of filling subshells generally follows the diagonal rule:
1s → 2s → 2p → 3s → 3p → 4s → 3d → 4p → 5s
Example (Sodium, atomic number 11):
1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s¹
