Shaila Abhyankar (“Jiji” for her nieces, nephews and students) is the proprietor of Shilpi Niketan. Shaila is a recognized Master Craftsman and is passionate about preserving the handicraft traditions of India. Costume dolls have been made in Indian homes for generations from paper mache and dressed for various occasions such as pujas or simply used as a decoration. Shaila Abhyankar is well-versed in many art forms and has written a book for children on crafts now in use in schools across Maharashtra. She currently devotes her time to reviving the art of costume dolls, and trains underprivileged women in this craft with the support of the All India Handicrafts Board. Media Inquires:

Established in 1978, Mingei International Museum collects, conserves and exhibits arts of daily use – by anonymous craftsmen of ancient times, from traditional cultures of past and present and by historical and contemporary designers. The Museum’s Founder, Martha Longenecker, was a professor of art at San Diego State University who studied the art of pottery-making in Japan. As an artist craftsman, she became acquainted with and learned from the founders and leaders of the Mingei Association of Japan, who inspired her to carry the vision of mingei to the U.S.A.
