It’s the story of four girls in 1920s Chicago: Olivia and Helen (from the ultra-rich Black Devenport family), Ruby (their close family friend), and Amy-Rose (the Devenports' caretaker).

What starts as a search for suitors quickly turns into family politics, money wrestling, Black activism, and the harsh reality of racism. The writing, character development, and handling of these heavy themes start off great.

So why is it the worst love story to read?

Because the ending is bogus.

This 378-page book drags out the story only to stop abruptly without a proper resolution for any of the main characters. After everything they go through, they achieve nothing, leaving their ambitions and love interests completely incomplete. Instead of teaching compassion and love, it just leaves you with the idea that money is over everything.

The abrupt ending completely ruins the purpose of the entire story, and the lengthy build up of the climax.

I’m giving it a 2/5 stars only because the writing was good otherwise, it’s a 1-star read. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

Don't waste your time reading this book. The book is a disappointment.

It's not a love story, not a book on activism. The plot of the book was good but the climax was dragged too much and the ending is not even there.

The rich get justice. The poor have to fight for it… Hear me out.

People who have money do charity for which they get a lot of tax concessions. But people make them feel like they donate money.

We as common people have to struggle to protest against institutions for our basic rights but the institutes serve the rich

This same theme is followed in the plot of the book The Devenports by Krystal Marquis. It is the story of an ultra rich black family of Chicago from the 1920s. When their fellow black people were protesting against the racism and atrocities against the blacks the family was busy in love triangles, betrayal. And just by doing charity they think of themselves as great people.
This is a drama book recommendation from my side.
