History matters, especially in how we teach it to the next generation!
January 30th marks Martyrs' Day (Shaheed Diwas)—the day Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. Last year at school, I noticed a display for Jan 30th featuring Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev. While all three are incredible national heroes, their sacrifices are commemorated on March 23rd, the day of their martyrdom in 1931.
I mentioned this mix-up last year hoping we’d see an accurate tribute this year. Sadly, this year, there was no poster or mention of the day at all.
Honoring our history means getting the details right. Gandhiji’s message of peace and truth deserves to be remembered on January 30th, just as Bhagat Singh and his comrades deserve their rightful place on March 23rd. Let’s make sure we teach our children the full and accurate story.
