The 6th edition of InfoVision was held on October 19 & 20 at SAP Labs, Bangalore. The theme of InfoVision 2012 is “ SMAC ( Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud) is smart”.
SMAC is the latest acronym to enter the jargon-filled technology space. SMAC--an acronym for Social, Mobility, Analytics, and Cloud has entered the business conversations in a big way. Experts and business heads believe that SMAC will help companies to ride the next wave of business opportunities and is also expected to help Indian companies to innovate and move away from traditional business models. Industry veterans see an integrated SMAC to change the way companies do business in future. Based on the industry trending, a unified Social, Mobile, Analytics (Big Data predominantly) and Cloud based solutions appear to be the 'next big thing'.
The combined potential of SMAC technologies is estimated to be $70 billion to $200 billion over the next three years. And, that's the reason why most of the software vendors today are betting on SMAC.
Research firm Gartner terms it as the nexus of four IT forces — cloud, social, mobile, and information (in other words analytics). Those forces, along with the continued impact of consumer spending, are expected to essentially set the stage for the next generation of capabilities that drive new business scenarios.

The International School of Information Management, University of Mysore organized a Special Lecture on “From Print to AR – Smart Media of the Future” by Dr. Arved Carl Hübler, Chair of the Professorship, Institute for Print and Media Technology, Chemnitz University of Technology on 8-3-2012 at 10:00 AM.
The talk discussed the evolution of Print Media and how it has adapted to advances in technology – from it’s humble origins on papyrus leaves, to the Guttenberg printing press, to Augmented Reality used in devices like smartphones. Dr. Hübler gave insight into the current state of print media and forecasted its future. He described how electronics are helping to change the Print Media landscape – giving examples such the first mass-printed transistor, integrated circuit on paper, printed loudspeakers, etc. An example particularly relevant to Indian society was the idea of cheaply printing solar cells on the inside of cardboard packaging – so that they can be used to harness solar energy for electricity instead of being discarded.
Dr. Hübler later on explained the coding of Information with reference to moveable type printing and how it has become more efficient through the use of the Phoenician alphabet (as opposed to Chinese script) and Electronic binary code. He went on to explain the restrictions of the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) process, OCR Methodology and how optical coding developments are bringing in AR into unexpected places – from magazines and books, to cereal boxes and toys. Dr. Hübler ended the talk with the memorable example of AR used in onsite language translation of English signs into Spanish.

Today, Information Management managers, have a multi-fold competing priorities to balance. The data (internal and external, structured or unstructured) can open up unmatched opportunities of gaining information insights. The data deluge and the ushering of the use of Analytics would create both technical and transformational challenges. On one hand, they will have to transform the organizations’ data assets into value-added, timely and accurate information to deliver in line with the goals of the business. On the other hand, innovating information usage for sustaining growth and creating product or service differentiation in the marketplace in which the enterprise operates.
Infovision is an ISiM crafted initiative, started in 2008. First of its kind in terms of collaborative effort from the biggest Industry forums like TDWI Chapter, CSI, DAMA, acm and IEEE
