Raleigh India first began operations in spring 2008 through Expedition programme. Teams of volunteers worked alongside project partners to develop and raise awareness of eco-sanitation units, rain water harvesting methods and tribal community centres. In summer 2012, Raleigh India introduced the International Citizen Service programme. Through ICS, volunteers focussed on improving livelihoods and
increasing access to safe water and sanitation, working hard to develop infrastructure, carry out awareness raising activities and deliver peer-to-peer education. We strived to recruit young people from across India to volunteer on all our programmes. By doing so, we empowered young people from a diverse range of backgrounds to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in communities, supporting them to develop skills that they will use long after their Raleigh experience. In 7 years, 3,400 volunteers from India and around the world worked alongside in 198 rural communities to create lasting change, 1,300 safe sanitation units were developed to improve the health of rural communities, 20,000 people attended awareness-raising sessions led by volunteers. The values of Raleigh will live on in India through the National Raleigh India Society, whose members are now planning how they can continue to create lasting change in their local communities.
