A Kalaripayattu class for beginners during Camp Cardamom’s first session last May. The world’s oldest living martial art, Kalari combines aspects of yoga and Ayurveda, and is thought to have been a precursor to Karate and Kung Fu.

A procession of elephants during a temple festival near Varkala. This is a fairly common site across Kerala, though sightings of wild elephants are much rarer. We do find them all around our camp in Marayoor, however. Swipe to see a shot of a herd of tuskers we spotted in the nearby Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary.

After a heavy monsoon rain in early June we took a walk to explore ephemeral waterfalls. It’s amazing how quickly a heavy shower changes things.

Our 2019 yoga teacher Nikhil Bhansali takes a moment to reflect in our courtyard garden.
We thought of this moment today as we passed 5,000 Instagram followers. We never expected such an overwhelming response and are so grateful for your love and support.
Camp Cardamom is for everyone, an idea embodied here by Nikhil, who is Jain, meditating next to the Buddha, in the courtyard of our host Pius X Monastery. Love and peace to you all. 🙏🌈😘

A snack break taken on an excursion through tea country last May, when the Gulmohar, or May flower trees, were in full bloom. Native to Madagascar, the Royal Poinciana, as it is also known, was brought to India by the British in the 19th century. Locals have told us the sticky flowers kill mosquitoes, but it’s more likely the trees were planted for their ornamental value and to control erosion.set against the emerald green of the tea plantations, they can almost seem ablaze—hence their other common name: the flame tree.
