A procession of elephants during a temple festival near Varkala. This is a fairly common site across Kerala, though sightings of wild elephants are much rarer. We do find them all around our camp in Marayoor, however. Swipe to see a shot of a herd of tuskers we spotted in the nearby Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary.

A snack break taken on an excursion through tea country last May, when the Gulmohar, or May flower trees, were in full bloom. Native to Madagascar, the Royal Poinciana, as it is also known, was brought to India by the British in the 19th century. Locals have told us the sticky flowers kill mosquitoes, but it’s more likely the trees were planted for their ornamental value and to control erosion.set against the emerald green of the tea plantations, they can almost seem ablaze—hence their other common name: the flame tree.
