Prabha Devi: The Uneducated Woman Who Built a Forest!
Prabha Devi may not be educated, nor does she know her date of birth, but her wisdom about nature surpasses all. At 76 years old, she has single-handedly created an entire forest in her village in Uttarakhand, proving that true knowledge comes from the heart. e
Her self-made forest includes over 500 trees of various species, such as oak, rhododendron (a beautiful evergreen shrub with large flowers), cinnamon, and soap nut (reetha).
Hailing from Palashat village in Rudraprayag district, Prabha Devi started her journey years ago, dedicating her entire life to tree plantation and environmental conservation.
"My family had a small piece of barren, uncultivated land. I began planting trees there and around my house. Today, it has become a dense forest, and my mission is to turn barren land into greenery." - Prabha Devi
Married at the tender age of 16 with no formal education, Prabha Devi has acquired remarkable knowledge about tree plantation through her own efforts. She knows exactly what each tree needs to thrive, adapting her methods to the local conditions for the best growth.

Meet Gujarat’s Nish*ta Rajput: Empowering 34,500 Girls with ₹3.8 Crore in School Fees

Nish*ta Rajput, a compassionate changemaker from Vadodara, Gujarat, has spent over a decade transforming the lives of underprivileged girls through education. With unwavering commitment, she has helped cover the school fees of more than 34,500 girls, raising a total of ₹3.80 crore to ensure they never have to drop out due to financial hardship. Her journey is not just about funding—it’s about empowering generations.

Raised in a family rooted in social service, Nish*ta’s values were shaped early on. From accompanying her father in his efforts to support the needy, she developed a deep empathy for those less fortunate. A pivotal moment in 2010, when she met the daughter of her domestic help who couldn't even tell the time, stirred something within her. That encounter solidified her resolve to make education accessible for every girl she could reach.

What sets Nish*ta apart is her transparent and personal approach. She gathers small donations—often in the form of ₹1,000 cheques—and directly deposits them into the accounts of more than 140 non-profit schools across Gujarat. While most girls receive at least ₹1,000 annually, some have had their full fees, up to ₹10,000 a year, entirely covered. Her direct involvement ensures that the aid reaches the right hands and is used responsibly.

Even during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nish*ta remained undeterred. In 2019–20, she raised ₹69 lakh to support 6,900 girls, and though donations dipped to ₹53 lakh the following year, she chose to reduce her own wedding expenses and redirected the funds to help 251 more girls. She also created fixed deposits for 21 girls, ensuring their educational future.

But her impact extends beyond the classroom. Nish*ta also works towards economic empowerment, distributing sewing machines and supporting women through tiffin services. Her vision is holistic—uplifting entire families by educating daughters and enabling mothers.

Nish*ta Rajput’s work is a beacon of hope and a reminder that true change begins with empathy and action. “If we donate education,” she says, “the impact lasts for generations.” Her story is a testament to how one person’s dedication can transform the futures of thousands.
