The Rachana Sansad’s Institute of Environmental Architecture is part of the postgraduate wing of the Academy of Architecture, Mumbai. We don’t think so.

Vision:
When architects construct buildings, it has an impact on the environment. It affects the ecology of the place, disturbs the flora and fauna, changes the course of water bodies, pollutes the air and depletes finite natural resources. Is such destruction imminent and inevitable? At the Institute of Environmental Architecture, we believe that the architect’s primary role is ‘stewardship’ of t

One day workshop on Rainwater Harvesting 08/09/2015

A one day workshop on ‘Rainwater Harvesting’ was organised by the Rachana Sansad's Institute of Environmental Architecture (RSIEA) on 5 September 2015 for the students of the Masters Program in Environmental Architecture. The workshop was also open to professionals and about 100 participants were part of the workshop.

The speakers included Ar. Nandan Mungekar, Dr. Ajit Gokhale and Mr. Sachin Kulkarni. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Roshni Udyavar Yehuda, Head, RSIEA and faculty members Dr. S.R. Kashyap and Prof. Mukund Porecha.

Ar. Mungekar gave an overview of the history of rainwater harvesting and the related geological aspects. He further explained the concepts and implementation of harvesting with case studies. The participants were shown a water dowsing demonstration and introduced to various types of rocks forming part of aquifers.

Mr. Sachin Kulkarni explained about the hydrogeological factors like permeability, porosity and hydraulic conductivity which are important aspects considered for recharge. He also elaborated on the soil resistivity test carried out to locate preferred areas for artificial recharge and depth of aquifers viz. two pin survey and four pin survey respectively.

Dr. Gokhale further highlighted the importance of water conservation and hydrogeology through various case studies.

After interaction with the experts the students had to undertake a practical design exercise for rainwater harvesting at Rachana Sansad, Prabhadevi. They presented their proposed solutions for implementing an effective rainwater harvesting system to the faculty members of RSIEA.

CoA - NIASA National Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Thesis 28/08/2015

For the second year in a row, Rachana Sansad's Institute of Environmental Architecture has done well at the CoA - NIASA – National Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Thesis 2015 for Sustainable Architecture.

Congratulations to Ar. Darshan Shah for being awarded the 'Runner Up' Trophy for his thesis on 'Supply naturally treated waste water for irrigation by building highway landscapes'.

Last year, our students - Netramohan Changmai and Shoaib Hanjgikar bagged the first and the runner up award along with Mansi Bhalerao who was given special mention.

'Design Thinking' Workshop 19/08/2015

A workshop on 'Design Thinking' was organised by the Rachana Sansad's Institute of Environmental Architecture on 9 August 2015 for the students of the Masters Program in Environmental Architecture. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Tamar Akov and Prof. Roshni Udyavar Yehuda, and facilitated by the design faculty team of RSIEA - Prof. Rajeev Taishete, Dr. S.R. Kashyap, Prof. Mukund Porecha, Prof. Prajkta Adhikari and Prof. Charvie Mehta.
Based on the 'design thinking' concept propagated by IDEAO, the workshop led students through the process of design - identifying a design challenge, developing tools of research and analysis for existing knowledge, and finally ideate in a group to come up with either a evolutionary or revolutionary design solution.
The approach is human-centered - to design for base of pyramid, and relies on creating an empathy map. In what turned out to be an exciting 10 hour process, students in mixed groups, were charged with ideas and presented their designs with fervour. Most were evolutionary...some were revolutionary!
