UPI was launched in April 2016 with just 21 banks connected to the network. In less than a decade, it has grown into one of the world’s largest digital payment systems, with 700+ banks now connected and annual transaction volumes rising from around 2 crore to 24,162 crore.

The scale of adoption has accelerated dramatically. In July 2026 alone, UPI processed 2,366 crore transactions worth ₹29.9 lakh crore, with around 55.49 crore users currently using the platform for digital payments.

What makes UPI’s growth particularly significant is its dominance in everyday payments. Around 63% of transactions are merchant payments, and 86% of those are below ₹500, showing how deeply UPI has become embedded in small, routine purchases from groceries and food to local shops and daily services.
