12 years “free” or “publicly funded” education? A good outcome.

The Right To Education Act 2009, that ensures free and compulsory education for children between 6 and 14 years of age has faced one hurdle after another. In this video, students, who are supposed to be the ultimate beneficiaries of the policy, tell us about some of the hurdles the Act has run into. These include lack of awareness about the Act, inability of stakeholders to make sure that every enrolled student stays in school, rigidness about enrolling a child in an age appropriate class despite low learning levels as well as the circumstances and thought processes of parents that relegates education as something that is not essential.

"The education environment cannot be divorced from the external landscape. The "in-here" experience needs to be directly linked to the "out-there" experience. Our schools and universities are not a comfort zone or an idyllic island resort but rather deeply rooted in the here-and-now..."
Here are a few interesting thoughts on how we can change our approach to education this new year.
Why We Need A Revolution, Not Just Evolution, In Education
Research has substantively established an inter-linkage between countries that embrace innovation and, thus, change, and economic prosperity. Governments and the bureaucracy in emerging or developing economies, on the other hand, tend to suffer from an acute disavowal of all that challenges existing…

As part of a larger study on 'Connected Learning: Cities as vibrant learning spaces', CASER was associated with City as Lab, a four-month-long research project conducted by children from Class 6 to 9. Here is a short report on what the initiative is about and how it gives children an opportunity to discover their ability to reason, think critically, work collaboratively, and more importantly, understand their city as participative citizens. We have also tried to encapsulate how teachers, who are not familiar with project-based learning, too become comfortable using the pedagogy in their classrooms.

"204" illegal schools in the city and many more in the country - are the schools coming up because there's a demand or for profitability? Should they be penalised and shut down or supported to do better? Not sure if it is an open and shut case..
After the RTE Act was implemented on April 1, 2010, a new rule mandated all private schools to apply for fresh recognition from the education department every three years. This was done to keep a check on whether schools are following RTE norms under parameters like good infrastructure, toilets, water etc, including implementation of a 25 per cent quota for underprivileged children. How feasible is this?
