A little throwback to how our students started the school year: six tech-free days in the rainforest of Sabah, Malaysia, as part of our annual Rite of Passage 🌿🇲🇾

🌿 Rite of Passage: Malaysia 2026 🇲🇾

Each school year at TGS begins with a similar tradition: the Rite of Passage, or ROP. It’s a chance for our community to step away from the city, welcome new members into the mix, and begin forming the relationships that will shape the year ahead.

This year, that meant six days in the tropical rainforest of Kiulu, Malaysia.

And the rainforest definitely made its presence known.

There was pouring rain, muddy days, bugs everywhere, and nights spent sleeping in hammocks. There were survival challenges, workshops and conversations about communication, compassion, resilience and belonging. There were visits to the Kiulu River that quickly became a highlight of each day, and opportunities to meet and learn from those who call Kiulu home. Most importantly, it was an opportunity for our community to put what it means to be bravely curious into action.

Through it all, students were challenged to rely on one another: building shelters, cooking together, navigating the wilderness, reflecting around bonfires and thinking about what it really means to be part of a community. The experience culminated with our new students being welcomed into the TGS Circle, a symbolic moment marking their place in our community.

Rain, hammocks, bugs and all, the TGS Class of 2026-27 has officially begun its journey. 🌏

What if your next dive inspired your first video game? 🤿 🎮

For Kenzo, diving first sparked an interest in underwater photography. Over time, that passion evolved into something entirely unexpected: game design.

For his Mastery Project at THINK Global School, Kenzo combined both passions to create a VR experience that brings the underwater world to life. Users can explore vibrant reefs, swim alongside marine life, and even plant coral and sponges to help restore the environment. No scuba tank required.

Looking back on his time at TGS, Kenzo shared:

"I'm going to miss what TGS has meant to me. It's been such a meaningful time in my life, and I'm going to miss that a lot. But I'm also really happy that I miss it so much because of how much it meant to me."
