Born in October? Opal and tourmaline are your birthstones. And both are bursting with color.

Opal is a phenomenal gemstone, putting on a prismatic show called play-of-color caused by light diffracting off tiny silica spheres in the stone. Ancient civilizations believed in opal's electromagnetic magic: Bedouins believed it stored lightning; for the Greeks, it granted prophecy. By modern measurement, it's a 5 – 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and the most productive mines are in Australia, Ethiopia and Mexico.

Tourmaline grows in many hues. The coveted colors include deep pinks and reds (rubellite), rich greens (verdelite) and neon blues (paraíba). When the chemical composition is just right, more than one hue shows, like the green-ringed pinks in watermelon tourmaline. It's a 7 – 7.5 on the Mohs scale, so relatively hard, making it suitable for most regularly worn jewelry. Brazil, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Mozambique are known sources of this gem, plus California and Maine in the United States.

Blue sapphires have been cherished for thousands of years, symbolizing nobility, fidelity and the heavens. Some of the finest blue sapphires come from Kashmir, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Sri Lanka.

With sapphires available in a wide range of blues, it's easy to find one that suits your style. Save this guide to September's birthstone to help you choose the perfect sapphire for you.

COLOR: Royal and cornflower blue sapphires are the most valuable, but paler sapphires, greenish blue sapphires and bi-color sapphires are trendy options that can be more budget-friendly.

CLARITY: Sapphires are often heat treated to improve their color and clarity. Unheated sapphires are rarer and more valuable. Stones with more inclusions are sometimes polished into cabochons or star sapphires.

CUTTING STYLE: Commercial-quality sapphires are cut into calibrated shapes and sizes, while fine sapphires are cut into a variety of shapes to retain weight. Fantasy cuts are popular for paler sapphires.

CARAT WEIGHT: While sapphires can occur in remarkably large sizes, many tend to be overly dark, pale, or lacking in transparency. Fine sapphires that combine rich color with high clarity are rare in larger sizes.

When showcasing a gemstone, the setting makes all the difference. Here are six popular settings you may see when jewelry shopping:

1: Prong settings use tiny metal posts to hold the stone securely while maximizing light return—perfect for brilliance and sparkle.
2: Bezel settings encircle the gem with a thin metal rim, offering a sleek, modern look and excellent protection for daily wear.
3: Channel settings secure smaller stones between metal walls to create a smooth, seamless band.
4: Cluster settings group multiple gems together to create the illusion of a larger, brighter centerpiece.
5: Decorative settings incorporate design elements like engraving, milgrain, halos or ornamental metalwork to add personality or vintage flair.
6: Flush settings set the gemstone level with the surface of the metal, creating a smooth, low-profile look that's secure, subtle, and ideal for everyday wear.

Each style offers its own beauty—choose one that best reflects your personality and lifestyle.

"Technical mastery earns you a seat at the table. It doesn't, by itself, earn a customer's trust." 💎

Ankit Gala, Managing Director of , shared the principles behind his brand and a grounded piece of advice for our graduating batch.

Three choices that define how Antara does business:

🔹 Jewelry reports as a floor, not a ceiling — every diamond in jewelry is verified by GIA, because that's the baseline of honest business. But the report proves the diamond, not the relationship.
🔹 One price, one customer — no discounts, no bargaining. Because two prices tell someone their trust is worth less.
🔹 Legacy over advertising — competing on relationships, not marketing budgets.

His message to graduates: you enter this industry with rigorous, scientific knowledge earlier generations never had. That's a real advantage, but success comes from carrying both halves of this craft: the science of the stone, and the trust earned one customer at a time.

Thank you, Ankit, for such a generous session with the next generation of gemologists.

Sapphire jewelry requires regular cleaning and care to preserve its beauty. Follow these three tips to keep your sapphire jewelry sparkling for years to come.

- Clean Regularly: Dirt, oils and everyday residue can dull a sapphire's sparkle over time. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Ultrasonic cleaners are safe for most sapphires, but should be avoided for clarity-enhanced stones.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Clarity-enhanced sapphires can be damaged by acids and household chemicals. Remove your jewelry before using cleaning products. Untreated and heat-treated sapphires are generally more durable.
- Store With Care: Although sapphire is one of the hardest gemstones used in jewelry, it can still be scratched by diamonds, rubies and other sapphires. Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or compartment to help protect it.
