IIM Mumbai was delighted to welcome Mr. Kapil Modi, Partner at The Carlyle Group, to campus for an insightful interaction with our students.

During his visit, Mr. Modi also met with Prof. Manoj Tiwari, Director, IIM Mumbai, for a meaningful exchange on the evolving private equity landscape, industry-academia engagement, and opportunities for collaboration between the institution and the industry.

As part of the Private Equity and Venture Finance course conducted by Prof. Ramesh Bhatt, Mr. Modi engaged with students through an enriching guest session that brought real-world private equity perspectives into the classroom.

With over 18 years of experience at Carlyle, Mr. Modi has been involved in more than $4.5 billion of investments across technology and financial services companies, including Hexaware, Knack RCM, Adastra, Nxtra Data, Quest, Visionary RCM and Cyient.

The session began with students presenting two investments associated with Mr. Modi, analysing the deals from an external perspective. Mr. Modi shared valuable feedback on the presentations, offering students a practitioner’s perspective on evaluating businesses, investment opportunities and value-creation strategies.

He subsequently shared insights from his extensive journey in private equity, touching upon the workings of PE firms, his experience in the industry, career opportunities in the space, and, most importantly, exit strategies and the considerations that influence a PE firm’s decision to exit an investment.

The interaction provided students with a comprehensive perspective on the private equity lifecycle — from evaluating an investment opportunity and creating value to ultimately realising that value through an effective exit.

A special thanks to Prof. Ramesh Bhatt for bringing this practitioner perspective into the classroom and providing students with a deeper understanding of the private equity ecosystem and career opportunities within the industry.

As part of the joint VLFM programme by IIM Mumbai and IIT Delhi, we had the opportunity to interact with Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, during his visit to IIM Mumbai, alongside Prof. Manoj Tiwari, Director of IIM Mumbai.

The interaction offered insightful perspectives on the rapidly evolving industry landscape and the role of emerging technologies in reshaping manufacturing and businesses across sectors.

The discussion touched upon several important themes shaping the future:
🔹 Emerging technologies are becoming increasingly integral to core industry functions, transforming how businesses operate and create value.
🔹 Technology-driven transformation is extending beyond manufacturing, creating new opportunities and redefining the way businesses across sectors operate.
🔹 Continuous learning, adaptability and innovation will be essential for leaders to remain relevant in an environment of rapid technological change.
🔹 The future demands resilient and future-ready organisations that can effectively integrate technology with business strategy and human capabilities.
🔹 Leadership is evolving - future leaders must be able to bridge the gap between technology, business and people to drive meaningful and sustainable transformation.

Tomorrow at IIM Mumbai: a conversation on why digital transformation still stalls in traditional industry.

The PGPEx Batch 2 Industry and Mentorship Committee is hosting a conclave panel discussion on Digital Transformation in Traditional Industries, bringing together leaders who have driven large-scale digital change from the inside, across manufacturing, FMCG, insurance, life sciences, and IT consulting.

On the panel:
🔹 Prasad Desai, Senior GM, Head IT (India), Bridgestone India
🔹 Sreemoyee Ghosh Dastidar, Chief Digital Transformation Officer, Emerging Markets & R&I, L'Oréal
🔹 Kulbhooshan Patil, Head of Data Science & Analytics, Tata AIG General Insurance
🔹 Ravi Bhaisare, Vice President – IT, PerkinElmer
🔹 Kavindra Sharma, Executive Vice President (Retd.), L&T Infotech; former Global Head of Consulting and Head of L&T's Center of Excellence for Technology

Moderated by Tanvi Balekundri, Lead, Digital Transformation & Change Management, Tata Projects.

The conversation goes beyond the usual transformation success stories, into where these initiatives actually stall: scaling past the pilot stage, measuring the wrong KPIs, misjudging risk, and the structural drag of legacy systems. Five leaders, five industries, one honest conversation about what really works.
