IIM Mumbai was delighted to welcome Mr. Kapil Modi, Partner at The Carlyle Group, to campus for an insightful interaction with our students.
During his visit, Mr. Modi also met with Prof. Manoj Tiwari, Director, IIM Mumbai, for a meaningful exchange on the evolving private equity landscape, industry-academia engagement, and opportunities for collaboration between the institution and the industry.
As part of the Private Equity and Venture Finance course conducted by Prof. Ramesh Bhatt, Mr. Modi engaged with students through an enriching guest session that brought real-world private equity perspectives into the classroom.
With over 18 years of experience at Carlyle, Mr. Modi has been involved in more than $4.5 billion of investments across technology and financial services companies, including Hexaware, Knack RCM, Adastra, Nxtra Data, Quest, Visionary RCM and Cyient.
The session began with students presenting two investments associated with Mr. Modi, analysing the deals from an external perspective. Mr. Modi shared valuable feedback on the presentations, offering students a practitioner’s perspective on evaluating businesses, investment opportunities and value-creation strategies.
He subsequently shared insights from his extensive journey in private equity, touching upon the workings of PE firms, his experience in the industry, career opportunities in the space, and, most importantly, exit strategies and the considerations that influence a PE firm’s decision to exit an investment.
The interaction provided students with a comprehensive perspective on the private equity lifecycle — from evaluating an investment opportunity and creating value to ultimately realising that value through an effective exit.
A special thanks to Prof. Ramesh Bhatt for bringing this practitioner perspective into the classroom and providing students with a deeper understanding of the private equity ecosystem and career opportunities within the industry.
