When Every Mark Matters, Does Handwriting Still Matter?

For a Class 10 student, every examination is a test of knowledge—but it is also a test of how clearly that knowledge is communicated on paper.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to conduct a Handwriting Awareness & Improvement Workshop for Class 10 students at IDBUS School, Bhandup, and once again, I was reminded of something we often overlook:

Students spend years preparing what to write, but very little time learning how to present it effectively.

As a Expert, I guided the students on some simple yet important aspects of writing:

• Legibility – Can the examiner read every word effortlessly?
• Letter formation – Are the letters clear, consistent and properly formed?
• Spacing & alignment – Does the answer sheet look organised and comfortable to read?
• Writing speed – Can students maintain clarity even when they are writing under examination pressure?
• Presentation – Does the written work reflect the student's confidence and discipline?
• Consistency – Can the student maintain the same quality of handwriting throughout a lengthy examination?

These may appear to be small details.

But in a Class 10 board examination, small details can influence the overall reading experience of the evaluator and, more importantly, the student's confidence while writing.

Why should schools think about this?

Our Class 10 students are at a crucial academic stage. They are taught what to learn, how to prepare and how to answer.

We should also teach them how to present their knowledge effectively on paper.

A handwriting workshop is not about making every child write in a particular style.

It is about helping each student understand their own handwriting, identify areas that can be improved, and develop habits that support clarity, speed, confidence and better written presentation.

I believe such interventions should become a meaningful part of the preparation journey of every Class 10 student.

To all Principals and School Leaders:
Before our children step into their board examinations, let us equip them not only with knowledge, but also with the ability to communicate that knowledge clearly and confidently.

Sometimes, improving the way a child writes can improve the way a child approaches writing itself.

Because when a student has something valuable to say, their handwriting should never come in the way of being understood.

My sincere appreciation to IDBUS School, Bhandup, for creating this opportunity for its Class 10 students and for recognising the importance of skills that go beyond the textbook.

It was a privilege to conduct the Improvement Workshop for the enthusiastic students of Horizon Public School, Airoli. Their energy, curiosity, and willingness to learn made every moment worthwhile.

My heartfelt gratitude to the school management, principal, and teachers for believing in the importance of handwriting as a life skill. Together, we are nurturing confident learners—one stroke at a time
