While reading a mathematical word problem, it's always better to translate it into equations.
For example, consider the following problem.
If a clothing company has 3 manufacturing units in cities A, B and C with total of 500 employees, and each employee works in only one unit. If 2/5 work in A, twice as many work in C as in B. How many work in C?
In this problem, 3/5 of 500, i.e, 300 employees, work in B and C combined. Let x people work in B, then 2x people work in C.
So we have the following equation,
2x+x=300
Or, x=100
Or, C has 200 employees.

A second type of problem is numeric entry one where you have to type in an answer. In my opinion, it might be hardest since there are no options to fall back on. Let's look at an example.
What is the radius of the circle whose one diameter has endpoints (-5,5) and (3, -1)?
In this problem be very careful about the words used-what is given and what is asked.
So what's the answer guys?
There are different types of problems in GRE quant section. We will see examples of each type in the coming few days.
First type is quantitative comparison.
Here 2 quantities, A and B, will be given. You will have to compare them and choose one of the following options:
A. Quantity A is greater.
B. Quantity B is greater.
C. The two quantities are equal.
D. The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
An example: Let x and y be two integers.
Quantity A: x×y
Quantity B: x+y.
Don't automatically assume that A is correct option Take few varied examples to be sure
If x = 2 and y = 3, then yes,
x + y = 5 < 6 = x × y.
But see what happens when x = 1 and y = 1.
Here x + y > x × y.
So the correct option is D.
There are no negative scores in GRE. So if you don't know the answer, then it's always better to make an educated guess. Who knows, it just might take you to your dream college.
There is a multiple choice question type in quant where you are expected to either give a single answer or indicate all correct possibilities. When in doubt, it's better to eliminate few choices rather than try with all of the possible options.
As an example, let us say there is a triangle with base length x and height y where both x and y are positive integers. Also let the area of the triangle be 111 cm squared. Then what are the possible values of x?
Without even looking at the options, we can eliminate few choices.
Can you tell me how?
For quant, you have to solve 20 problems in 35 minutes or in 2100 seconds. In other words, you have 1 minute 45 seconds to solve one problem. Let us say you take on an average of 30 seconds to read and understand a problem. That leaves you with 1 minute 15 seconds to solve one problem.
If you find that you aren't able to solve a problem within a minute, then mark it and maybe come back to it later. There is no point wasting time solving a problem.
GRE scores are valid for 5 years from the day you take exam. It's extremely rare for people to wait this long to get admissions. But for whatever personal reason you have to postpone your admission, then not only remember this duration but also check whether your desired grad schools will accept your scores.
