New licensure path for foreign-trained physicians
BY: JACKIE LLANOS - JUNE 6, 2024 5:26 PM

Florida lawmakers passed a measure this year allowing physicians trained in other countries to be licensed in Florida without completing a residency, and the Florida Board of Medicine is starting to grapple with the change.

Under the “Live Healthy” initiative Senate President Kathleen Passidomo spearheaded during this year’s legislative session, foreign-trained physicians with active licenses in the countries in which they studied will soon have a new path to practicing medicine in Florida. A committee of the Florida Board of Medicine voted on Thursday afternoon to start crafting a rule implementing the law.

Usually, medical school graduates complete residencies, during which they practice under other physicians’ supervision before securing a full license. The change lawmakers approved allows them to skip that training period in the United States if they have already completed a residency in their home country.

The biggest question the board faces is figuring out which overseas residency programs are “substantially similar” to accredited programs in the U.S., said Paul Vazquez, executive director of the board. The committee charged with crafting the rule could meet again on July 9, before the full board’s meeting on Aug. 2.

“We were trying to put together a meeting in between to keep moving the process forward so we can get language as soon as we can to make sure the statute can be implemented as quickly as possible,” Vazquez told Florida Phoenix following the meeting Thursday.

Physicians trained outside of the U.S. will have to meet the following criteria to get a license in Florida:

Practiced medicine during the four years before submitting a licensure application;
Have medical credentials evaluated by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates;
Get a full-time job offer as a physician from a Florida health care provider.
That commission is a national agency that certifies international medical graduates to continue their training in the United States.

Once the physicians receive licenses in Florida, they must keep working in the state for two consecutive years.

The “Live Healthy” initiative aims to increase the number of physicians and nurses as the state’s population grows and gets older. Gov. Ron DeSantis approved the initiative on March 21, 2024.

Happy New Year to All..!

Our Heartiest Congratulations on your Centennial Year!
It has been our honor to work closely with the parent organization.
As President of the TNMC Alumni Association of America, I welcome you to be an integral part of our organization.

As the pandemic continues, looking back at last 3 years of challenges and curveballs but also a year of successes and high achievements for Nair hospital.

As we navigate this uncharted, virtual world and fulfill our mission to connect alumni by fostering relationships, we find ourselves welcoming members from alumni nationwide. I am privileged to work with a group of dedicated board members, and executive committee members that chose to gracefully embrace these new opportunities. These individuals hopefully will turn these years speed bumps into ramps to accel our programs into the future during a season of uncertainty.

We have had virtual board meetings, to keep in touch with each other.
We will focus on deliverables that will increase our availability to a broader array of alumni. We strive to be intentional in our efforts to promote inclusivity and will deliver those goals through an ongoing virtual platform.

These years have taught me, that it is more than just being a member of the alumni, it is about being connected to people all over the world who share the same love for their Alma Mater. Since its inception, the spirit of this organization has never faded. I am inspired and invite you to be a part of the team.

Your kindness and concern provide a sense of steadiness in an uncertain time, and I appreciate the strength of our alumni community more than ever now. I am looking forward to having a reunion as soon as feasible here in the USA. We are soliciting members from all 50 states and Canada and around the world to join us at our next meet.

My plea to you is to donate generously to our Alumni Association so we may continue to help our Alma Mater.

2012 - instituted Full Scholarship Award for 2 students (1 male & 1 female)

We are here to honor and acknowledge the importance of our TNMC college years in our lives. How can we forget the influence that teachers had in our lives?

100 years may have gone by, but we can still re-live the dissection halls, common rooms, clinics, lecture rooms, hospital and the silence of the final exams, that were witnesses to our growth and transformation. Let us keep being ambassadors of this prestigious institution.

There is still a lot to be done here At TNMC and Nair Hospital and we look forward to your support my friends even though we cannot solve all the world’s medical problems, CHANGE always starts with an individual! Your support to our Alumni has been priceless in terms of your attendance at our meetings and generous contributions that have been able to make a difference in the lives of indigent patients of B Y L Nair hospital

So, my dear friends, while we still have the current of life flowing through us, let us rise to the challenge presented to us by the times we are living.
DO ALL YOU CAN, WITH WHAT YOU HAVE, IN THE TIME YOU HAVE, IN THE PLACE YOU ARE and be an integral part of our Alumni!

Dear Fellow Alumni:

I am delighted to introduce myself as the President of TNMC Alumni Association of America.

Happy holiday season to all of you !!
I have served on the board since inception , and am looking forward to continue to build our alumni activities and strengthen the association between our alma mater and all its alumni.
Among my goals are to help connect alumni with similar interests and offer more opportunities for social activities, as well as raise more funds for TNMC. Check our Indian TNMC AAA alumni website, while our USA alumni website is getting updated. Follow us on Facebook and update your e mail contacts to make sure you are receiving special alumni communications and invitations to all events.
For the time being, alumni communication is only being sent via email.
As part of this initiative, a database was created so alumni near and far can identify the ways in which they would like to help current students—shadowing, researching, speaking at lectures, or providing resources for residencies and away rotations.
The current pandemic has hampered our plans to meet in person or attend our centennial celebration that took place this year in Mumbai . As proud alumni ,we have achieved so much in this country and are forever grateful to our mother country and TNMC for the sound education that gave us a head start in our careers.

“Let us all come together and contribute some funds for this centennial year to The Alumni so we can fulfill our duties to complete the projects at TNMC. “

Thank you to my fellow board members and the executive committee as well as our members . No one can do it alone so let’s join hands together to accomplish our goals.

Please email [email protected]
with your suggestions and to find out the
mailing address for donation checks.

Happy and a safe New Year 2022 !!

Thanks.
