- Payal, 'I visit quite often and the title on the cover page of one of their awakened my curiosity enough, to browse through it. Hooked, I bought the book and read it, only to realise that despite being a teaching one how to lead a long and happy life, it seemed more like a simple reminder to follow the things we already know, yet tend to ignore.
The authors,Hector Gracia and while researching this book have interviewed residents of a village who have among them the world's longest living people. The here, follow a simple lifestyle which includes keeping a healthy diet, drinking green tea, doing small movement exercises, practicing positive thinking and the most important working towards their Ikigai which refers to the reason or passion for living. It can be anything that you don't grow tired of doing and can practice even without monetary incentive. The book suggests different ways to identify your Ikigai by say, observing what makes you happy or gives meaning to your life or somethig that you would not want to retire from.
Personally, I've been a for 13 years now and the book made me realise that teaching is and will always be my Ikigai. Even if tomorrow, I no longer earn from teaching, I'll still be happy to do it. Seeing that my 3 yr old son, who I have read to from 6 months of age, now willingly picks up book to read; I have recently started an experimental initiative in which I,weekly read books to a group of 15 - 20 kids with a hope that this translates into a ingrained habit of reading for them.I can't tell you how happy these sessions make me.If in any way I am able to teach them to be passionate readers of the future, I can think of no better gift.
To sum it,there are many ways to keep your Ikigai alive, read the book and first find out what is yours!'

Independence means freedom from control or influence of others. Yesterday as we celebrated our 73rd INDEPENDENCE DAY, I am flooded with thoughts which make me question the very basic feeling of independence. Are we as individuals really independent?what does independence mean to us? As an individual we are bounded by so many pseudo restrictions, mental bondages that we hardly lead an independent existence. Before doing anything or sometimes even before thinking about anything, we think about what my family, my near and dear ones or society will react to what I do? I cane across a picture somewhere, where I could feel the early sun's rays peeping through clouds and providing life to waves in the ocean. A soft wind flowing over the ocean water creating ripples. A flock of swans on the ocean bed welcoming the sun and the cheerful day. Huge green lush mountains in the backdrop providing the perfect backdrop to the picturesque scene. [ 355 more words ]

Today a friend of mine discussed with me that she feels there are phases in a person's life, good and bad ones. They seem to eternally follow each other. Further she felt it was her good phase that was going good on and she dreaded that soon a bad phase was to follow. I had a different view point on this conversation. [ 232 more words ]
