Why is Republic Day celebrated on the 26th of January?
Our constitution was completed after nearly 3 long years of hard work by Dr. B.R.Ambedkar on Nov 26th 1949. It's the world's longest written constitution!
However, the founding fathers of Indian democracy decided to hold off enforcing it by a couple of months to 26th January 1950. This date was chosen to mark the anniversary of Purna Swaraj (1930)—the declaration to attain complete independence and obtain self-rule as opposed to dominion status within the British Empire.
