The Uber ban is quite idiotic. By the same logic, the Delhi Government should resign since it happened in their jurisdiction. The person responsible is the driver.
I have been involved deeply in the area of taxi, cab drivers in India for the past four years. In India it is important to understand and which will be the challenge in most emerging economies that the technology can only take go so far in solving the discovery, fulfillment and enable the transaction. Also the actual vehicle - the car, van in India is currently state of the art - Toyota, Hyundai but where it can also fall through is the driver eco-system. Unlike other transportation providers airlines ( pilots), Rail ( train drivers) who are well paid and secure, bus drivers and car drivers are among the poorest. Even basic literacy is an issue also the quality of life is poor.
The one thing that all these taxi cos have helped is increasing earnings, providing access to car loans but the one aspect that no one has paid heed is the behavior, soft skills, values of the drivers. Unless one impacts the "within" of the driver, this will suffer.
How can one do a profile check if a driver is going to commit a crime. For all those who visited India, etc they will talk about the importance of the driver in the urban transportation system. But impacting him as the human being is the least of the concern for everyone.
That was our mission with Mass Education Campaign to engage with 5 millions of Drivers but to do anything for the poor in India is difficult. All businesses target the consuming class.
I dont think safety can be ensured only through apps, technology..in addition there needs to be behaviorial and attitudnal change.
Lets hope all stakeholders wake up to this.
Do have a look at this youtube which explains our mass education campaign for drivers
