डॉ. मनमोहन सिंग यांचा जन्म 26 सप्टेंबर 1932 रोजी पंजाबमध्ये झाला. त्यांनी1952 मध्ये पंजाब विद्यापीठातून अर्थशास्त्रात पदवी आणि 1954 मध्ये पदव्युत्तर पदवी प्राप्त केली. त्यांनी 1957 मध्ये केंब्रिज विद्यापीठातून त्यांचे इकॉनॉमिक ट्रायपोस पूर्ण केले. त्यानंतर त्यांनी 1962 मध्ये ऑक्सफर्ड विद्यापीठातून अर्थशास्त्रात डी.फिल केले होते.

तर 1971 मध्ये भारत सरकारच्या वाणिज्य मंत्रालयात आर्थिक सल्लागार म्हणून रुजू झाले. त्यांना लवकरच 1972 मध्ये वित्त मंत्रालयात मुख्य आर्थिक सल्लागार म्हणून पदोन्नती देण्यात आली होती. UNCTAD सचिवालयात अल्पावधीत काम केल्यानंतर त्यांना दक्षिण आयोगाचे महासचिव म्हणून नियुक्त करण्यात आले. याशिवाय डॉ. सिंग यांनी वित्त मंत्रालयात सचिव, नियोजन आयोगाचे उपाध्यक्ष, भारतीय रिझर्व्ह बँकेचे गव्हर्नर, पंतप्रधानांचे सल्लागार आणि विद्यापीठ अनुदान आयोगाचे अध्यक्ष अशी पदेही भूषवली होती.

2004 ते 2014 असे दहा वर्ष ते देशाचे पंतप्रधान होते.

विद्वान, मृदू, मितभाषी आणि संवेदनशील नेता म्हणून मनमोहन सिंग यांची ओळख होती. 33 वर्षे ते राज्यसभेचे सदस्य होते. तर देशाचे पहिले पंतप्रधान जवाहरलाल नेहरू आणि इंदिरा गांधी यांच्यानंतर 10 वर्ष पंतप्रधान राहणारे पहिले पंतप्रधान होते.

डॉ. मनमोहन सिंग 1991 पासून राज्यसभेचे सदस्य होते जिथे ते 1998-2004 पर्यंत विरोधी पक्षनेते होते. 2004 आणि 2009 मध्ये काँग्रेस पक्षाच्या ऐतिहासिक विजयानंतर त्यांनी 22 मे 2004 आणि पुन्हा 22 मे 2009 रोजी पंतप्रधानपद स्वीकारले होते. डॉ.सिंग यांची विकासाप्रती असलेली बांधिलकी आणि त्यांच्या अनेक कर्तृत्वाची ओळख त्यांना बहाल करण्यात आलेल्या अनेक सन्मानांद्वारे करण्यात आली आहे.

यामध्ये 1987 मध्ये पद्मविभूषण, 1993 मध्ये युरो मनी अवॉर्ड ऑफ द इयर ऑफ द इयर, 1993 आणि 1994 या दोन्ही वर्षातील अर्थमंत्र्यांचा आशिया मनी पुरस्कार आणि 1995 मध्ये भारतीय विज्ञान काँग्रेसचा जवाहरलाल नेहरू जन्मशताब्दी पुरस्कार यांचा समावेश आहे.
