What if plastic could dissolve without leaving a trace?

At IIT Bombay, Dr. Rohit Srivastava (Professor, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering), Vigyan Shri 2024 awardee and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2021 recipient, is leading Project PAANI, supported through CSR funding, to develop biodegradable plastics from cassava waste.

The research has developed four plastic variants with targeted water solubility, ranging from lukewarm-water soluble to boiling-water soluble options. These materials break down naturally into CO₂ and water, without requiring industrial composting, combining cassava starch with polymers such as PVA and PLA to achieve both performance and biodegradability.

Designed for applications across food packaging, agriculture, and healthcare, the project addresses plastic pollution while also creating economic value for farming communities by monetising agricultural waste.

With ISO-compliant biodegradability testing underway, the technology is now moving towards commercial scale-up.

Celebrating innovation, entrepreneurship, and the future of technology at IIT Bombay🚀

The IITB-Groww INV.ENT Program marked a significant milestone as we celebrated the first batch of winners of the Grand Challenge (GC) and PoC Support Program — an initiative designed to empower students to transform breakthrough ideas into impactful real-world solutions.

Supported by the Groww Foundation, the program aims to strengthen the culture of deep-tech innovation and entrepreneurship by enabling young innovators to build scalable, solution-driven technologies that address real-world challenges. Through mentorship, proof-of-concept support, and innovation-driven collaboration, the initiative encourages students to think boldly, innovate fearlessly, and contribute towards the future of technology.

The event brought together faculty leaders, mentors, and student innovators who are shaping the next generation of impactful solutions and startups emerging from IIT Bombay.

Some evenings don’t feel like an event. They feel like time folding gently back on itself.

That was the spirit of the IIT Bombay Nashik Chapter Meet.

As alumni gathered for the evening, the years seemed to dissolve effortlessly into laughter, shared stories, hostel nostalgia, and conversations that resumed as though no time had passed at all. There was warmth, familiarity, and that unmistakable sense of belonging that the IIT Bombay community carries with it.

Amidst these moments of reconnecting, Prof. Shireesh B. Kedare spoke about the many ways alumni can contribute to the Institute’s transformation journey through their time, expertise, mentorship, and support. He also reflected on the importance of a strategic and integrated approach to research that can help accelerate the shift from the science of technology to the engineering of technology, while continuing to keep students at the heart of this journey.

The evening also looked back at IIT Bombay’s own journey over the years, as the Director shared reflections on the Institute’s evolution and a film showcasing the many transformations across campus. The Dean ACR took the alumni on a journey further into the various research domains and research centres on campus, also spotlighting the instrumental role that alumni have played in enabling this transformation.

Dipti Datye (tag) spoke about the Alumni Association and its growing engagement with the alumni community, while (tag) shared highlights of the Nashik Chapter’s activities and initiatives.

From recreating iconic hostel moments to reliving memories from campus life, the gathering reflected the warmth, familiarity, and easy camaraderie that continue to define the IIT Bombay alumni community.

A special shoutout to the Nashik Chapter EC and the alumni community for coming together to support and make the evening possible.

As the evening came to a close, what remained was not just nostalgia, but the quiet reminder that some journeys continue long after campus life ends.

At the Valedictory Function 2026, the Class of 2026 marked their transition from campus life into a lifelong relationship with the Institute.

The evening brought together journeys across generations. Jerin Venad (Dual Degree, Mechanical Engineering, 2014), CEO & Co-Founder of Cityflo, reflected on the freedom IIT Bombay gave him to explore, fail, and discover purpose. “From tomorrow, your syllabus disappears,” he shared. “And you have to figure out what you have to work on.”

Prof. Surekha Zingde (M.Sc. Chemistry, 1972), Trustee of the Indian Women Scientists' Association and former Deputy Director at Cancer Research Institute, ACTREC, shared memories and life lessons from her own IIT Bombay journey, leaving the graduating class with a powerful thought: “In a reaction, the catalyst doesn't just speed up, it creates a new path. Be a catalyst.”

Even before graduating, the Class of 2026 has already begun giving back. Through their Legacy Project, the batch came together with 500+ pledges, 25+ contributions, and commitments exceeding ₹10 lakh, marking their transition from students to alumni with collective impact.

You arrive as a student. You leave as an alumnus.

AI in BFSI is moving from experimentation to ex*****on, with a sharper focus on scalability, risk management, and measurable business impact.

At the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay – Optiver AI Innovation Lab National Symposium on AI Innovation in BFSI Services, conversations centered on where AI is delivering real value today, where it is falling short, and what it will take to bridge that gap. From navigating regulatory complexity to building resilient, data-driven systems, the discussions highlighted a clear shift from ambition to accountability.

Research presented at the symposium reflected a strong convergence of industry and academia, with leading banks sharing their work on AI implementation in BFSI.

Discussions ranged from cybersecurity frameworks to ethics and risk mitigation, with transformers and digital infrastructure frameworks at the centre of focus.

The event was inaugurated by Prof. Upendra Bhandarkar, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations. The symposium brought these ideas to life through a mix of keynotes, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and research presentations, spanning applications across banking, insurance, and financial services.

Contributions from Prof. Dipak Gupta, Prof. Prof. S.V.D. Nageswara Rao, Prof. D Manjunath, Prof. M.D. Agrawal, Mr. Suhrid Brahma, Mr. Chinmay Bhatia, and Mr. Amit Roy, along with the leadership of Prof. Rajendra M Sonar, Ph.D., reflected the strength of industry-academia collaboration in driving meaningful progress.

We also acknowledge the valuable contributions of the session chair, Prof. Vijay Kumar Manupati (IIM Mumbai), for his insights and guidance to presenters, and the support of Optiver Labs and Prof. Rajendra M Sonar in making the symposium a success.

Tomorrow, the IIT Bombay alumni community comes together in Nashik.
