CEP Autostyling DAY 6
Prof Nishant Sharma, IDC, IIT Bombay
Mr. Vishal Patil, Senior Designer, Mahindra
Ms. Maithilee Apte, Design consultant- CMFG
Mr. Sanket Patil, Design Consultant- CMFG
Students, IDC, IIT Bombay

Day started with wonderful KUV Interior Design case study. Mr. Vishal laid stress on how designers conceptualise the interior forms and engage in the entire ex*****on of project. Needless to say, being a completely new kind of vehicle on Indian roads, challenges to design such interiors were high. Kudos to Mahindra team for doing good interior designs.

Next were sessions on using software to generate quick interior forms. Umesh Dinde and Prabal Namdeo did a good job doing that.

The last workshop of the day (and course) was on Colour, Material, Finish and Grains. It is always wonderful to see the passion of Maithili and Sanket when they handle the subject. They exhibited materials and showed lot of examples to emphasise the need of CMFG in automotive design and product design.

Day and course ended with course certificate distribution.

Many thanks to all who made it to attend the course.
Many thanks to experts who took out time and spent time sharing their knowledge.

Many thanks to all my students (junior and senior) for coordinating and organising everything.

DAY 5

Speakers:
Prof. Nishant Sharma, IDC
Prof. GG Ray, IDC
Mr. Subhro Mukherjee, Digital Advisor, Microsoft
Students of IDC

Opening talk on Automotive Interiors by Prof. Nishant helped the participants to understand the high level of complexity involved in designing interiors as compared to exteriors and the necessity of a feedback after any interaction. This was followed by short talk on evolution of automotive interiors by Pdb Deepak.

Prof. G. G. Ray, who is an expert in ergonomics made the audience think hard on issues relating to ergonomics which we generally take for granted. The major takeaways from his talk were to keep things simple and to use the principles of universal design in the design process.
The session ended with a short quiz for the participants on the topic of percentiles.

In his talk on automotive interaction design, Mr. Subhro from Microsoft spoke about various influences a user undergoes and the technology that will be playing a major role in connected mobility in the future. He briefly explained how Microsoft is developing future software solutions for automotive OEMs.

The day ended with a short film on interior trends.

DAY 4

Speakers:
*Prof. Nishant Sharma, IDC, IITB
*Professional Automotive Clay modeller,
*Students of IDC

The day started with live sketching and rendering demo of two wheelers by Prakash Sonkamble and Abhishek Gogoi and the participants sketched along with them. Simultaneous explanation while rendering by presenters helped participants to understand the process better.

Next session on computer aided surfacing (CAS) was conducted by Umesh Dinde and Prabal Namdeo in a similar fashion. Seeing a 2D image transforming into a 3D model in Autodesk Alias was interesting. The 3D model was then used to create a photorealistic render.

The participants were introduced to the world of clay modelling by a fun activity using play-doh. This was followed by a professional automotive clay modeler. He used a variety of tools starting from a rake and a ‘chokkaki’ for rough scraping to spring steel strips for final finishing. Working with clay is a highly emotional experience. No wonder why reputed brands still use clay modelling in the era of advanced digital sculpting.
