The ii V I IV Progression
Overview
This progression is a ii-V-I-IV in the key of A. Our chords are Bm-E-A-D.The first approach is very folky, in the style of James Taylor or Gordon Lightfoot. We’ll be playing in first position and using quite a bit of movement within each chord to pick out a simple but very pretty melody on the 1st and 2nd strings. The second approach takes on the rhythmic pattern of something a horn section might play. It’s a 16th note, syncopated pattern and we’re using chords that are more often used in jazz or funk than folk or rock.

Rhythm Makeover
Introduction
Find new ways to play that same old groove! One of the coolest aspects of creating this course has been preparing 2 completely different rhythm ideas for each progression. As you learn them and play them yourself, you might enjoy recording one of them and playing the second one along with it. In a lot of cases, they work beautifully this way!

But the other reason for doing this - creating 2 different grooves - is to remind you that there are so many ways to lay down that groove, and the more open your musical mind is, and the more flexible your chops are, the more unique and awesome you’re going to be as the rhythm guitarist, whether that’s in your band, as a singer/songwriter or accompanying a vocalist.

The I IMaj7 I7 IV Progression
Overview
This is a I-Ima7-I7-IV progression in the key of D. Our chords are D-Dma7-D7-G. I think the song that comes to most of us when we hear this is the Beatle’s ‘Something’. There’s something really compelling about hanging out on the I chord, while changing the quality of the chord, then jumping to the IV chord, a temporary release after all that tension building up. Our rhythm track is in a 6/8 feel. Our first approach uses chords in 1st position and really supports the 6 feel with a syncopated 8th note strumming pattern. The 2nd approach takes us to a completely new place using a drop D tuning and using a combination of open strings and hammer ons. There’s also an advanced variation on this approach that uses harmonic tapping.

Approach 1: Performance
The I V vi IV Progression
By varying the amount of right hand palm muting you use, you’ll change the sound and the feel of this riff. Also try focusing your pick on different strings - I put a lot of emphasis on the bass notes but you may want to feature more of the higher strings.

The IV iii ii I Progression
Overview
This is a IV-iii-ii-I progression - or I like to refer to it as a descending bass line. It’s probably more common to start with the I chord and take your bass line down either by ½ or whole steps, but we’ve chosen to give you something a little different and start on the IV chord. Paul Simon’s ‘59th St. Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy) uses this progression for the entire song. For our demonstration we’ll be in the key of E so our chords will be A-G -F -E.

Our first approach uses a minimalistic pattern of descending 5ths played on the 3rd and 1st strings. This could work well underneath a busy lyric or melody. In contrast, our second approach uses voicings that let us keep the 1st and 2nd strings open and with a full, rhythmic triplet feel strum we’re taking up a lot more sonic space. This approach works well with a simpler melody idea on top of it or over a solo. This approach gives us a chance to practice our left hand muting technique.

The I vi ii V Progression
Overview
This is a I-vi-ii-V progression in the key of G. So we have G-Em-Am-D. This progession is sometimes referred to as the 50's progression, since so many songs from that time use it. For instance, Jack Lawrence and Charles Trenet's 'Beyond the Sea', Sam Cooke's 'Loveable', and we also see it in more current pop songs like Elton John’s ‘Crocodile Rock’, Green Day’s ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ or Led Zeppelin’s ‘D’yer Mak’er'.

In our first example we’re using first position chords and playing our bass notes in time with the kick drum. We add a few color tones to provide a nice movement within the progression.

Our 2nd approach uses voicings up in the 8-12th frets giving us some very high notes on the 2nd string that move in a simple melody. We use the open 1st string as a drone for this version. The rhythm is completely in opposition to the movement of the bass and kick drum, giving us a real nice syncopated feel.
