Two brothers – Two biographies!
by R.V.Rajan
I was one of those who got inspired by a talk on `Biography as History` by Mr S.Muthiah, the well-known journalist and a Heritage champion, at a meeting of the Madras Book Club in 2007. He was extolling the audience, consisting mostly of retired people, to write their memoirs. I had just started writing my autobiography. His talk gave a better focus to my writing. The success of the autobiography released in 2009 made me take up writing seriously, post-retirement. Since then, I have been persuading many senior citizens to write their memoirs because I found going down memory lane for the book was fun. Besides, the writer leaves behind for posterity a record of his life story so that his grandchildren & the generation to follow will know the kind of life he led and the kind of society he lived in.
I am happy to say that in the last 15 years, I have managed to persuade 18 of my friends/relatives to write their memoirs, and they are all happy with the experience. I was delighted, therefore, when I received copies of their autobiographies from two more friends, Venkat & Sundar, both siblings, both ex-students of South Indian Welfare Society, Wadala, Bombay, where I studied. I was thrilled when they told me that I had inspired them to write their stories.
The autobiography of T.N.Venkatraman (85 years) is titled, `My Rewind-85`(127 pages) is the interesting story of a boy from a middle-class family in Matunga, who spent 39 years in the Tata group, starting as a steno-typist and retiring as Dy.General Manager of a division in the company. Humble beginnings to achieving greatness. It talks about the tribulations faced by his family when his father died at a very young age. How his mother, with help from one of his uncles, carried on the burden of bringing up the family of three children, ensuring that everyone was well settled in life. The book is full of interesting anecdotes and experiences, written in Venkat's inimitable style. In the book, he also talks about his service to society. The last chapter, focusing on his experiences dealing with different bosses as a stenographer, makes for an interesting read.
`Bullet Point Story- Dawn to Dusk` is the title of 82yrs T.N. Sundar`s book. In this thin book with 70 pages, Sundar has used a new technique of presenting the entire narrative as bullet points, which makes for easy reading. While Venkat stuck to one company for 39 years, Sundar changed jobs several times, before venturing on his own. Each time adapting to changing situations, he succeeded in whatever he did. It is a fascinating story of a not-so-brilliant student joining HLL as an Engineering apprentice, doing the Engineering certificate course at VJTI, supported by HLL, and later having a long innings with IBM. When the company decided to cease its operations in India, he joined Data Express, which later changed to Data Pro, of which he became a co-founder, doing multiple tasks, taking the IT company to great heights. Sundar`s story is one of ambition, determination and hard work. The list of lessons that he learnt in his long life, featured at the end, would be useful for the younger generation.
Both brothers were physical fitness freaks in their younger days. They talk in detail about their long association with Modern Health Home, the first such home in Matunga, founded by their father (late)Prof. T.V.Narayan. After his premature death, the home was nurtured by their uncle (late) T.V.Harihar, making it a model health home that trained many bodybuilders and weight lifters. Both brothers, who were part of these aspiring students, won several prizes in both state-level and national competitions. They also mention that their uncle, a lifelong bachelor, was a pillar of strength to the family.
I found both the books unputdownable. I urge all senior citizens who have lived a full life to start writing their memoirs, if not already done. Just like going down memory lane with friends is fun, when it is done to write your own biography, it can be both a stress buster. and therapeutic.
The books are for private circulation only. Those interested in getting a copy can contact Venkat on 9972345015 or Sundar on 9890163843
