Uttarakhand was formed 20 years ago on November 9, 2000. The state was formed by joining several districts of the northwestern region of Uttar Pradesh. The state which was formed in 2000, underwent a name change in 2007 when the state was renamed Uttarakhand from Uttaranchal. On November 9, 2000, Uttarakhand became the 27th state of India. Its border states include Tibet, Nepal, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand means "northern city" in Sanskrit.

Dhanteras is celebrated on the first day of the five-day long Diwali festival. The suffix ‘Teras’ in Hindi is synonymous with the word Thrayodashi in Sanskrit which refers to the thirteenth day of the waning phase of the moon. The different rituals connected to Dhanteras aim at praying for the prosperity of the household and health and long life. On the day of Dhanteras, many households perform Laxmi puja. Dhanteras sets the auspicious and celebrative mood for the Diwali celebrations. It is also considered auspicious to bring home silver, copper or brass utensils on this day.
