🇺🇸 F-1 Student Visa — After Approval: India → USA
Once your F-1 visa is approved, the process generally goes like this:
1. Passport is retained
* The U.S. consulate keeps your passport to print the visa.
* You should wait for the passport to be returned before making non-refundable travel arrangements.
2. Track passport delivery
* Use the U.S. visa appointment/passport tracking system you registered with.
* You’ll receive notification when your passport is ready for delivery/collection.
3. Check your F-1 visa carefully
When you receive your passport, verify:
* Name
* Passport number
* Visa class: F-1
* Birth date
* Visa expiration date
* Number of entries
If there is an error, contact the consular section that issued the visa.
4. Prepare for travel ✈️
Keep these in your carry-on, not checked baggage:
* Passport with F-1 visa
* I-20
* University admission/acceptance information
* SEVIS information/receipt
* Financial documents
* Accommodation details
* Emergency/university contact details
5. When can you enter the USA?
For a new F-1 student, you generally cannot enter more than 30 days before the program start date on your I-20.
6. At the U.S. airport 🇺🇸
At immigration/CBP, present your:
* Passport
* F-1 visa
* I-20
CBP makes the final decision on admission. A visa itself does not guarantee entry.
7. Get your I-94
After admission, your I-94 records your authorized stay. For F-1 students, it is generally marked “D/S” (Duration of Status).
8. After reaching your university
Complete your university’s international-student check-in, attend orientation, and make sure your SEVIS/student record is activated as required by your school.
