Yesterday, we got an incredible opportunity to partner with the foundation of one of the world’s leading global organizations for a powerful experiential learning intervention focused on Collaboration, Ownership, Accountability, Playing to Win, Asking for Help, and identifying the “Square Wheels” that may be slowing down the achievement of organizational goals.

With 45 leaders and managers in the room, what made the experience truly powerful was not just the learning objectives, but how the learning unfolded.

A US-based IT organization brought together teams from India and the US for a high-impact strategy meet using The Search for The Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine simulation. A powerful learning emerged from our Collaborative Leadership Skills experience. Teams were working through 10 levels of strategy games, and for some groups, Levels 8, 9, and 10 felt “impossible.” They came back saying, “We tried everything, but we just can’t cross Level 9.”

Then we compared scores. Other teams had already reached Level 10, Level 12, even Level 14 out of 15. That’s when the real question landed: if someone else in the same organization has figured it out, why are you stuck? And the bigger discovery was this,“everything” didn’t include the two simplest actions: calling another team to ask how they solved it, or even pressing the Ask for Help button in the breakout room.

That’s how paradigms trap us. In our own mindset, we genuinely believe we’ve tried everything, until an outside lens shows what we missed. Breakthroughs often come from an outsider’s perspective, a role model, or someone who has already “been there, done that.” Sometimes the fastest way to win isn’t doing more, it’s asking better and being willing to ask for help.
