I am Angeline Dias, a 25 year old educator who believes in the potential of all kids and the magic they can create.
Did I always have this? No, not really. I wanted to bridge the gap but I was always hesitant about every child being able to overcome it. My two years were beautiful, overwhelming and transforming. Moreover, it taught me belief- in self and in other. I went on to be a Program Manager and manage the Higher Secondary classrooms in Mumbai. This taught me about belief too. Being with the first batch of Grade 10 fellows and students, I only started believing more in the power of students and the magic they can create. My kids are now in Grade 9 and hence I want to help them as much as I can. This Re-fellowship for me is not only about teaching the people who make me the happiest but also being about re-defining excellence for myself and Mumbai City. - St.Xavier's Alum,2013 Batch

Apply for the 2017 fellowship

This New Year's Resolve to Redraw India. Apply for the 2017 Fellowship. Early Decision Deadline December 24th 10 PM.
"When someone talks about a Government Boys school, we picture things like hooliganism, bullying, violence, passive or absent teachers and other such sad state of affairs. What about the level of English speaking? Children who study in private schools in most cases often assume that government school kids can’t speak English to save themselves and sadly all of the above is true. Except, if you enter my classroom.
Meet Musyab whose discussion yesterday was concerning Syria and Aleppo. He wants to understand how India and Pakistan don’t get along with each other if they still have trade ties! He worries about the smog levels in Delhi, debates about global warming with his classmates and loves to use the word ‘ecstatic’. However this was not always the story.
A 12 year old bright eyed, enthusiastic yet anxious Musyab entered my classroom on the first day of my Teach for India fellowship. It was his first day and mine too. He was tensed to see a new environment and all these new faces in the 6th grade.
When we first tested him on his English level, it was that of a first grader as per the TFI testing standards, when we told him this, he simply cried. He was struck with utter disbelief and he protested loudly claiming this is not who I am. He said test me again! So we did and the level was still the same. He went home and cried to his mother that day that he saw himself lower. His mother calmly taught him that language does not determine his human nature however the world does not think so, hence he must work hard. She knew in her heart that this boy would make it. Musyab wiped his tears the next day, stopped protesting and began working hard on the gargantuan task of learning English.
He worked hard both inside and outside the classroom. He internalized the values of the classroom such as Grit, Hardwork and reflection. He worked systematically every day to improve his grammar by writing and speaking in English. He never missed an opportunity to converse in his broken English. He would ask a million doubts, attend extra classes and everyday he looked forward to school hungry to learn.
We tested him again mid-year, his English level was that of a 2nd grader. We were amazed that he had shown growth of full year in a matter of 6 months. However Musyab being Musyab was baffled and upset at his level, he protested yet again saying I don’t agree but this time did not ask to be tested again. The following 6 months he doubled his efforts! He started reading English books, maintained a vocabulary journal, and watched English cartoons and movies as if he had decided to battle against Hindi! One can’t even guess what level he had when we tested him at the end of our first year! Any guesses?
GRADE-LEVEL! His English level was that of a 6th grader! In one year he showed 5 years of growth as per the CBSE standards of English. Although he didn’t ask to be tested again, we still tested him just to be sure and there was no doubt. This time when we praised him endlessly he looked at us gratefully and expressed with a smile that although he was happy, he was annoyed that his level isn’t higher! Words couldn’t express how my partner and I felt. We were amazed to see his level and overjoyed to see his reaction – happy but unsatisfied. This tiny human being is nothing less than a dragon, a giant trapped inside a tiny frame.
Miracles exist everywhere. This is a story of change that I will carry with me throughout my life. I have 60 boys in the classroom most of whom have had a decent growth and some have not even shown a growth in the time that we have spent with them. However, this one boy! He makes the struggle worth it. He makes us believe that we can truly invest and change each and every kid in our classroom. He makes us go the extra mile.
I know that I might not find a Musyab in every classroom, but I know that I will teach every day in every classroom that I go to, in the hopes of finding one like him" - Karthik Hariharan Teach For India
