Toddlers enjoy independence as much as adults for them being able to sit by themselves, ask for what they need in their own ways like using words with meaning for eg. 'Pa' for water or 'Nana' for banana helps them to express and understand their needs better and create joy when with a bit of help from the adult they are able to find freedom through independence.... Montessori believed that children's true nature, including their innate drive to learn and work, is revealed when they are given a prepared environment and freedom to choose their activities, allowing them to develop independently. The Absorbent Mind:
Montessori believed that children, especially in their early years, have an "absorbent mind" that allows them to effortlessly absorb knowledge and skills from their surroundings.
Natural Drive to Work:
She observed that children have a natural inclination to work and learn, not just play, and that this drive is essential for their development.

In the Montessori environment reading and writing come spontaneously by working with certain materials... a child breaks into reading and writing naturally...after doing the I spy games, phonetic sound recognition, tracing sandpaper letter, and other activities that lead to reading and writing... by the time the child is 5 years old he is able to read and write given favourable circumstances and opportunities ...
