We were honoured to host Mr Harish Sadani, Co-founder and Executive Director of MAVA (Men Against Violence and Abuse), Mumbai, for an incredibly insightful and nuanced talk on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) for SPJIMR's PGPDM students. Addressing a cohort of experienced working professionals, he shifted the conversation from mere legal compliance to the active creation of safe, respectful and equitable workplace cultures.

Drawing on his over 30 years of experience in creating a gender-equal society and prevention of violence, Mr Sadani provided a comprehensive overview of the legal definitions of sexual harassment and the mechanics of handling cases, explaining the structural evolution of why the ICC is now called the Internal Committee (IC). Using a series of case studies and small films, he demystified the roles of internal and external members, explored practical ways to make POSH guidelines accessible to all employees, and clearly outlined the distinctions between general harassment, sexual harassment and a hostile work environment.

Moving beyond the legal handbook, the discussion tackled complex gender dynamics with immense sensitivity. While acknowledging the historic injustices that necessitated these laws, Mr Sadani emphasised that a crime is a crime, and it may not be limited to a particular gender. He highlighted how progressive organisations are customising policies to make them gender-neutral.

Ultimately, this talk was less about rules or compliance and more about how leaders can co-create a truly conducive ecosystem for their coworkers. These insights are incredibly valuable for executive programmes like PGPDM, where experienced professionals must champion these values in both their learning environments, their respective organisations and their interventions.

Is energy access just about installing physical assets? We were thrilled to host Dr. Bankim Samaddar for an insightful guest lecture for PGPDM students at the SPJIMR campus, Mumbai.

In his session, Dr. Samaddar , currently Additional General Manager and Head of Technical Services at NTPC, Mauda, Maharashtra presented energy justice as a core development concern rather than a narrow sectoral issue. Drawing on his 30 years of experience in the electricity sector and his recent doctoral dissertation work in energy economics at IIM Kozhikode, he explained how energy systems influence education, health, livelihoods, women’s empowerment, agriculture, climate resilience, public governance and human freedom. Using the capability approach, he explained how energy access becomes meaningful only when people can convert energy into real opportunities and improve well-being.

The session moved beyond the simple narrative of electricity access to ask who benefits from energy systems, who bears pollution, displacement, tariff and climate burdens, who participates in decisions, and who can use energy during crises. Dr. Samaddar encouraged the development sector professionals to delve deeper to understand the role of energy in their developmental initiatives so that they may build programmes that deliver and empower.

Crucially, the data shared by Dr. Samaddar highlighted that energy poverty is distinct from income poverty, and that green transitions like solar can localise burdens on the vulnerable population if left unmanaged. Ultimately, the true test of any programme is whether it expands real freedom, rather than whether an asset was simply installed.

We were privileged to host Mr. Nivrutti Avhad, a young and dynamic IAS officer from the 2021 Batch and currently the CEO of Dholpur District, Rajasthan, for an incredibly insightful guest lecture with our PGPDM Batch 27 students at the SPJIMR Mumbai campus. As a driving force behind rural development and local governance, Mr. Avhad unpacked what it truly takes to create sustainable impact at the district level, bridging the gap between social policy formulation and its ground-level implementation.

During the session, Mr. Avhad elaborated on the various roles and responsibilities of a Zilla Parishad CEO in managing rural development, whilst mapping out strategic avenues where CSR initiatives and NGOs can collaborate with the district administration to amplify their impact. Drawing from years of hands-on experience, our guest speaker shared a practical playbook of DOs and DON’Ts for civil society organisations looking to partner with government bodies.

Students were particularly inspired by Mr. Avhad’s firsthand experience running successful social policy programmes, especially the rural library project widely known as “Digital Sanvidhan Ghars (DSGs)” under the flagship “Chandrajyoti Project”. The DSGs reclaim the old and unused rooms in government buildings into technology-driven civic learning libraries that are currently transforming local communities in Dholpur.

The lecture wrapped up with an energetic Q&A session, leaving our future social sector leaders with a profound understanding of how public-private-plural partnerships can shape the future of rural India. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Nivrutti Avhad for sharing such invaluable time, expertise, and passion with our PGPDM cohort.

Last week we inaugurated Batch 27.

And the next day, the newly joined students had an incredible day of adventure and team-building as part of their "Personal Exploration and Empowerment Lab" course. The cohort visited the Bhavan’s Nature and Adventure Centre (BNAC) at the SPJIMR Mumbai campus, for a series of activities and challenges designed to foster personal growth, leadership and camaraderie.

The day's activities included rock climbing, rappling, commando net, Burma bridge, spider net, rope walk, zip line, archery, rifle shooting and team building games. These experiences provided a chance for the participants to push their limits, support one another, and create lasting memories.

The event was a surprise yet a very meaningful beginning of their PGPDM programme setting a foundation for their journey at SPJIMR.

🌟 Celebrating the Inauguration of SPJIMR's PGPDM - Batch 27! 🌟

A truly momentous occasion as we officially inaugurate Batch 27 of our SPJIMR's Post Graduate Programme In Development Management (PGPDM)!

As India’s only internationally accredited Development Management Programme, the PGPDM continues to empower professionals to drive impactful social change by blending academic excellence with real-world learning.

This occasion was graced by our esteemed Chief Guest, Shri Sachin Shende, Regional Director of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Nagpur.

He shared several stories from the RBI office on his on the ground experiences promoting entrepreneurship and development promoting Micro Small Medium Enterprise. He highlighted why development professionals must focus on capable intermediaries to overcome the gap between government business and society.

Shri Sachin Shende said “It’s not only about lighting the lamp at the inaugural event, but it is about lighting the intent; intent is good, but it must be backed by discipline, skills, and capable intermediaries.” He congratulated the new joinees for taking an important step to build their capacity which he thought is very crucial in designing and strengthening the capable intermediataries at scale.

We were honoured to have Dean Prof. Varun Nagraj and the Chairperson of the PGPDM programme join us in welcoming the new cohort. In his address, Dean Prof. Varun Nagraj emphasized on how the PGPDM Batch 27 is a mix of participants coming from NGO, CSR, Corporate and Government on how non-profit organisations must cherish this diversity, and celebrate each other's accomplishments, learn from each other and contribute where there is a possibility.

In his welcome address, Chairperson Prof. Tanojkumar Meshram, Ph.D. highlighted that “PGPDM classroom is a safe and liberating space where education transcends technical skills to shape your worldview, ensuring that nothing you learn is purely theoretical—it is grounded in reality and designed for sustainable, real-world change."He emphasized how the PGPDM's curriculum and pedagogy emphasises the emancipatory potential of education.

With 50% female participants, representation from 13 Indian states, and an average of eight years' experience, this cohort embodies the commitment and vision needed to drive equitable and sustainable change. We're proud to continue fostering leaders who will shape a better tomorrow.

A warm welcome to all the participants of PGPDM Batch 27. We are excited to embark on this journey with you and look forward to the incredible impact you will create.

A Journey of Purpose and Growth
Reflecting on the morning of January 24th, the air at the PGPDM classroom NCR7 AT SPJIMR was thick with nostalgia as we gathered for the first half of the farewell for PGPDM Batch 25.

It felt like only yesterday that this group started their journey back in February 2025, and seeing them stand there a year later was truly moving. Participants took turns sharing the "why" behind their journey, reflecting on how joining this programme became a life-changing event that reshaped their personal and professional lives.
Through the lens of management contextualized for the social sector, Batch 25 found a safe and liberating space to grow, rediscovering a student life that many had longed for at a top-notch institute like SPJIMR.

The sheer diversity of the cohort turned every session into a masterclass of peer learning, where classmates evolved into mentors and partners in new social enterprises.
Adding to the depth of the session, the PGPDM Programme Chair, Prof. Tanoj Meshram, shared his own reflections, speaking warmly about how much he enjoys chairing this programme and the genuine fulfillment he finds in teaching such dedicated students.

Our faculty, including Prof. Arindam Das, Prof. Sajith Matthews, Prof. Jagdish Rattanani, Prof. Amit Jain, Prof. Ashish Desai, Prof. Janakiraman Murthy and Prof Ajinkya Navare, joined the session to express how teaching this batch was an equally meaningful learning experience for them, marking the end of a transformative year of shared wisdom.

Farewell: The Final Celebration of PGPDM Batch 25

The memories of the evening of January 24th still resonate deeply as we think back to the vibrant cultural celebration that closed the chapter for PGPDM Batch 25.

After a journey that began in February 2025, the participants, joined by alumni and faculty, transformed the campus into a scene of pure joy through songs, dances, and heartfelt skits.

A truly unforgettable highlight of the night was seeing the faculty join in the spirit of celebration; Prof. Tanoj Meshram took to the stage to sing a few songs with the participants, and Prof. Ajinkya Navare performed a beautiful song that struck a deep chord, making everyone feel incredibly nostalgic about their time spent on the SPJIMR campus.

This second half of the farewell was a testament to the fact that SPJIMR has truly become a second home for them over the past year. The energy was so profound that as the night went on, the thought of heading back home felt distant; the pull of classroom NCR7 and the bonds formed within its walls made everyone want to hold on to the moment just a little bit longer.

Even though the music has faded and the final dinner is over, the spirit of Batch 25 remains etched in this space, carrying with them the magic of a year that proved to be much more than just an academic pursuit.
